The step technique

can anyone give me some idea of the step recording technique. im confused on that. do i need to use it to put together and instrumental with an intro, verse, refrain, hook. All that stuff?[/color]

Usually i just do it to fine tune a pattern that i have preset in my head or bashed out on the pads w/o recording.[/color]
