Help with Timestretching!

Okay, I got two samples and they are slightly different lengths. I want to timestretch one of them so that they are the exact same lenght. Is there a formula that I can use to help me figure out what exact percentage I need to timestretch a sample. If I was good at math I would have figured it out on my own, but I'm not so I'm asking for help.

I want to know how to do it manually. I don't want to have to rely on Acid Pro.

If u got the 2000XL just go to: Shift [5] Trim

Highlight the entire sample in there then hit: [F5] Edit

Use the Jog Wheel to cycle through you options in this next window. Scroll all the way right until you seethis option: Time Stretch

Hit: [F2] BPM

Now from here choose the new BPM you want the sample to be played at... Just match it to the other sample's BPM....

O yea and on the screen before this you'll see where it says Preset you can choose what type of time strecth it uses... This is helpful because if your stretching a guitar sound and you choose to use a Drum time stretch you may meet with undesired results... Experiment with this technique and you'll have it mastered in no time.

Honestly, how long would it take to timestretch a 1 bar sample at say 80 BPMs to say 82 BPMs, and generally would would the quality be like on a 2xl with a sample with a lot of sounds happening? Thought I would ask!

Sorry I forgot to say that I have the 1000 and I'm using Cool Edit Pro2 to do the timestretching.

Yea that would work for 80 to 82 BPM... Don't sleep on that time stretch feature... I don't know if the MPC 1000 has it, but if it does it definitely does work fine... I find that my 2000 XL's time stretch is more accurate than the one in Cool Edit (I have Adobe Auditon... it's the same thing)... especially on drastic shifts in time.

Nah, the 1000 doesn't have timestretch, pitch shift, bpm match, none of that good wholesome shit. I hope akai adds that shit in an update.

Damn dude that shit is rough... I'm glad I shelled out the extra dough and got the 2000 XL and not the 1000... Well then heres the trick I use... In Cool Edit determine your two different sample's BPM's... I'm assuming you know how to do this???

Next determine where you want the BPM's to meet at (for example you want them both to play at 85 BPM instead of 80 BPM)

Now get a calculator and divide 100 by the the original BPM (in this case 100 divided by 80)

Now multiply this number by the BPM you want to reach (in this case multiply this number by 85)

Then enter this total in for the value of the Timestretch using the Strecth feature in Cool Edit...

Now check the BPM of the newly sped up samples... It might be a little off from 85 BPM so you may have to Undo and slightly fine tune the Stretch to get it just right... Experiment with this and stretching shouldn't be too hard...


Like I said before the Strecth feature in Cool Edit I'm not too crazy about... But for small BPM adjustments it will get the job done.

I have tried to find a good explanation of how to timestretch in other threads and cannot find one. I also looked in the MPC 2000XL manual and i cant see a good explanationin there either. Matmatiks could you explain how to use the timestetch on the MPC 2000XL?

I don't know how to explain it any better than the way I explained it earlier in this thread... Just follow that Tutorial as I explained before... Then set the new Tempo you want the sample to play back at on that screen... That's it...

Yo soulz... Check Page 107 of your 2000 XL manual... Check the section marked: BPM Match... That's what I'm describing.
