Any one ever try....

Recording their audio on to a VCR? I am kinda lazy and don't feel like taking my VCR downstairs and the patching it in as a front end for Protools. I was wondering if it will give you a similar tape saturation and tape compression sound to that of a 1/2" reel to reel. In theory it sound sound similar if the VCR is a 4 head. Let me know if any of you tried it. If not, I guess I would have to get off my ass and do it myself. I'll post the results if anyone is interested.

Back in the day folks used to do that with PCM based video decks. They were "digital." You may or may not get good tape compression with that. A cassette deck does it but maybe not well enough for a mastering session.


I'd try the VCR test. Ity may be the right way to go. Does it have an LED for audio input?

the sound will only be as good as your vcr heads basically..which in most cases concerning consumer vcrs is sh!t.....you may get a cool tape saturated sound but I would bet you could get a much nicer sound using just pro tools and its dynamics

i still do it. used to run a snake into 4 head sony hi-fi.

yes : fat tape sound with nice high end saturation. if you have a deck with seperate Audio Heads it's best.

right now i'm running out from a Tascam 688 into a JVC deck for some stuff.

some of the higher end decks are built for Video/Sound Editing and record seperate bands for the Audio.

whatever you're working with : make sure you EQ prior to tape cause it gets muddy and brittle pretty quick.
