How to get a swing like Dilla's

Hey!

I'm trying to improve the swing of my drums. Been reading this Future Producers thread but didn't get much wiser.

I'm trying to break it down technically so that I know exactly what's up as oppose to playing it live and getting lucky after a couple of hours.

So here's my basic drum beat. My hihats have a 16 1/64T note space between them. The clap appears 5 1/256T notes prior to the hihat, the snare appears 3 1/256T notes after the hihat, and the kick 2 1/256T notes after the hihat. Did that make sense?

What more could I do though? Push every 2nd, 4th or 8th hihat a couple of notes back or forth or something like that? I really have no idea - maybe some of y'all can help me though.

Quantize is just "the process of aligning notes to a precise setting". So if you quantize your stuff to a 1/32 grid, there's not much you can do. On the other hand, if you quantize your stuff to a 1/256 or 1/512 grid with some triplets on top, you get all the freedom in the world. Any rhythm in the world can be broken down into a grid, however small, and can therefore be considered quantized.

Back to my question though - how do I improve the swing of my beat? Right now I'm not even sure it has a swing.

Dilla said in an interview that, he got that style of drum programming from drummers who would play things a little off, but still sounded good. He said he turned quantize off.

Dilla did not go on a forum and ask how to sound like those drummers. :shock:

The same way a drummer plays with swing, THEY PLAY WITH SWING.

Develop some soul and play it out with some soul, simple as that.

A funky live drummer does not have swing setting. The groove comes from within.
