envelopes

i've heard about them what exactly do they do? And how do you use them ? I know its newbie question but maybe after some one answers it Tutor will move this 2 the newbies producer bible thread. ive learned on this site in the last week.

Simply put, you can use envelopes to fade in (attack) or fade out (decay) parameters, such as amplitude, filter cutoff etc.

DB explained it.
If you wanna learn more in detail, I guess the best place to get it is in the realm of synthesis or audio dynamics processing.
