Is there a difference in the two types of layering?

Hello all. Just fooling around with the MPC daily and starting to get a great grasp for it. A question I have is whether there is a difference between certain types of layering.

For example: On the 1000, I can go to the Program mode of a sample and add 3 extra layers to it.

But I can also use the Overdub function and just layer it that way.

Is there a difference in quality and/or sound when using a certain method? Thanks!

Difference in quality - no.
Difference in sound - depends on the way you program it.

Well say for example I have SNARE1 and SNARE2.

Would there a be difference if I just put them together under one pad and played the snare that way, or if i record SNARE1 then overdubbed SNARE2?

On a quantised track with the pads set to full level there would be no difference using overdub to layer. Non-quantised, no full level... Overdub method would effect the sound.

Trying it now and the sound is a lil different. No T.C makes is harder though so provides better results.

do u really need quantize
not unless u don't got rhythm

i dont believe in quantize!!
but im just saying he asked if it mattered between overdub and layering

edit: plus you will never hit exactly on 2 like you would with quantize
but i hate quantize

Overdubbing sounds that are assigned on different pads allows you to tweak each pad individually instead of having 4 samples assigned to the same pad you can only adjust as a whole.

Also, Simult Pad in JJ osXL gives a nice flexible way of layering.
