My question for everybody is do you think J Dilla got his classic drum sounds more from the choice of records he sampled or from the way he sampled his drum sounds.
What do you guys feel is more important? Do you think it's possible to give songs that nice heavy bump and snap using eq tweaks and layering even if you take a fairly average sounding drum hit?
Basically the reason I'm asking is because I'm all for digging in the creates and finding them awesome crusty drum breaks but legally you have to clear those samples if you choose to release anything. Although I am aware it's highly unlikely you'll ever get called out on a single drum hit from a record there is always that possiblity that one day you could, especially if a song one day became a hit. I'd rather do things as honest as possible and if I'm not willing to pay to clear something I may as well go for those royality free drum sounds (that never seem to be quite as good as the drums I dig in the crates for) and trying to tweak them to give that same type of vibe. I'm just curious as to how possible you guys feel that is?
P.s I'm gonna practice this and experiment anyway but it'd cool to get everyones opinion.
