So, I've been getting deeper into this drum layering information and have been gaining a lot of knowledge about ADSR envelopes and how to use them to prepare sounds for layering. My problem is I was taught by a guy using Soundforge, and that program is unavailable for Macs. I have been trying out some of his techniques using the volume automation in Logic, and getting good, similar results.

My main question for those that have a bit of experience with these techniques is this: Is there any substantial difference between using ADSR envelopes to shape a waveform versus just using 4 nodes of volume automation to shape a waveform? There doesn't appear to be, but I may be missing something.

adsr would be way simpler, but recording volume envelopes in the 4k lets you do more advanced envelopes when adsr wouldnt be enough, just harder to pull off since the lowest bpm you can set is 30, thats how much you can "zoom" in on a sound which you will need to do to be accurate and tight if you're doing it on a short sound, like a snare for example.. then you'd also have to pitch down that snare so the snare itself is emulating 30 bpm, in order to be able to hear how the full length is shaped with the automation before it is set back to its original bpm and pitch..

i'd stick to doing it in the computer if i ever needed to shape beyond adsr.. and use volume automation in the 4k to get some volume changes throughout a pattern to avoid it being static, also a good alternative to the 16 levels function.

edit: thought i were in the 4k forum so thats why i mentioned that particular mpc, but the same applies on other mpc's i guess..
