SP-1200 sound bite?

I never really cared for SP1200 sound exactly but there is a KRS-One song calle d "Perhaps She'll Die" where a distorted keyboard completely saved the song's worth. Since then plus Nas's "Take It in Blood", I've been wanting to replicate just that smoothly rugged distortion; plus what it does to drums is very nice too.

I was wondering if anyone was hip to any techniques for PC programs like Cool Edit (which I have) that would make not only drums but all types of waves sound as if they created in the SP-1200?

Via Cool Edit, when I lower sample rate it doesn't really do anything, when lower resolution (16-bit to 8ibit) it only produces hiss or does nothing, and when I distort the distortion is overdone or underdone.

I think I am on the right track but I want to know if there is a particular frequency I should be overdriving, or specific amount of overdrive I should arrive at, or a specific resolution or bit rate I should convert to.

Have you ever successfully replicated the SP-1200 "rugged" sound prefectly using a PC program or a plug-in? Which one or ones? What's your actual technique?

I don't think it's going to happen!
There's more to the sp-sound than low bit rates.. It's the actual hardware in the machine - D/A converters and ish like that, stuff which I have no clue about!
Maybe someone a bit more experienced in the field of electronics could give you a better explanation, like mpc3000 perhaps? He seems to know his technical stuff!

Word! U can only recreate the Sp with an other EMU machine from that time like Emulater series or Emax or something...

i get by back my first piece of gear i used when i was 14 years old,the yamaha SU10.It's a funny little sampling unit that hadles 4 diff. types of sampling :best quality (44.1 khz/16bit),standard,long (reffers to the sampling time) and extra long.So,i sample my drum sounds direct to it in "long" and i get nothin' but grimmy sounds! Then,i sample them directly to my mpc4000.I think it's an excellent combo of 2 machines and if you can put your hands on a su10,do it and sequence the drums on the mp.It will be grimmy as f*ck,believe me!!

I am affraid of the future.. when the time comes when my MPC dies all the samplers are 96khz and 100000 bits etc..! I dont want that transparant stuff I want grimey! and the technique you post a good one!

I might even go back to sampling to tape and from there to the hitech sampler haha!

Don't laugh at all! I know that Divine Styler made an entire record (Wordpower2:Directrix) with his MPC3000 and he choosed his drum samples,he wrote them to a tape and he sampled them directly from his cassete player to his MP.I remember him saying that to eq those sounds was very difficult and he spent hours but he finally get nothin' but dirty sound.

1).SP1200 exact sample rate is 12 bit at 26.040Khz so now you can re-sample your 16 bit samples ...

2).Like Cheech said it's also (more?!) about the converters, I don't think you're gonnna put sand paper in your MP/sound-card outputs to make it sound grimmy??, !!!

3).SP have ANALOG filterz, it's a warm sound,and real time...unlike the MP...

4).My actual technic is... that I'm owning a SP !!!

5).Your option is RogueMusic (1500$/SP) or AnalogJapan (2590€) real mint condition.

Go to the MPC environment board, you will find a thread page 36 name "crazy in love SP1200 faq" by a guy named itchyvinyl. It have a good link for faq on the SP...

Rogue Music don't have the SP1200 anymore... but they still at AnalogJapan....

There are a bunch of programs (plug-ins) I've overlooked that claimed they could replicate that "analog sound" cuz I wasn't interested with that;
do you think these pro-analog plug-ins could help me in my quest?

Or should I just give up my quest and return to the Shire?

What's AnalogJapan? cuz I usually only deal with PC programs and plug-ins when it comes to editing.

Tried the resolution and sample rate specs and got lo-fi results similar to what I was seeking

Used Batch File Convert via Cool Edit Pro
