I never understood the minnie mouse sped up vocal trends

If your gonna have the singer's vocals as your hook, why do you gotta make em sound like minnie mouse?

why not let the vocalist's true voice be heard on the track. it's not like it makes it more creative pitching it up like that, (not really skill involved there)and would be more respectful to the artist your sampling anyway

like back on kanye's "through the wire" why make her sound like minnie mouse?


never understood that trend on hooks, on really short almost like stab vocals i kinda understand it sometimes but whole hooks minnie moused out why???

I think they do it because its usually on old soul record, and they want to rap faster so they speed the sample up. Vocals still sound dumb though.

Maybe it's a result of speeding up records to save on sample memory in older machines? Kanye has been known to use the 2000 classic. Maybe he was speeding up his samples to save on memory and thought the chipmunk effect sounded cool.

Regardless, the chipmunk effect is overplayed and generally annoying, just like Kanye.

my theory is exactly that... you hear people copying kanye west all over youtube with the sped up vocals. Kanye got the style from the RZA who didn't abuse it and kill it and he certainly didn't do it annoyingly and garbage like kanye did. I'm sorry but the chipmunk thing is that annoying IMO.

nobody in modern days has any need to speed up samples to save sample memory, it's like now it's on some kind of hip hop beat checklist... like oh wait the track is almost done one more thing to do

yeah like for strings it doesn't make it sound wack... violins and all that. But when I sample something like that I put a lot of effort into cutting around the vocals when I need to pitch it up to the right tune. The guys pitch it to the tune they need and think it sounds good to have it like that. I have a policy (unwritten of course) no chipmunk bullshit in my house...

He is using the ASR10 for his samples. The MPC for sequencing.

I think sampling and using a complete hook isn't creative at all anyway.
Sometimes I use a sped up voice sample because it's in the sample I want to play at a higher pitch.Like maybe an 'oooh'on the downbeat that happens to be there somewhere at the end of ur chop and happens to sound good with the beat. But I never like it when the sped up vocal carries the whole beat or song.

well as an example of a beat i made where i had no option but to use the sped up vocals other than interpolating the whole damn thing(which was my original plan)..
