when the first 2 kick drums come in around 0:10, how did he get that effect with the drums to sound like your just barely able to pick up the first kick? does he have the velocity of the first kick REALLY low? like playing the first pad with 16 levels on?

it sounds different than the 2ndkick your able to pick up on easily and would quantize have to be on to achieve this "effect"

(im not around my mpc, havent been for 2 weeks now, but i'd like to ask this while im around a computer)

i've noticed this before, becuz i listen to ALOT of Fat Jon.

it either seems like what Menco said, using a different kick drum that is just played right before the "main" kick drum is played

OR

you could experiment with the velocities on your MPC, like you said in your own post.

I've actually tried this using 12 pads on my 500, then i'll just go into "step edit" and continue to edit how hard the "first" kick hit, until it gets this "fat jon" or "pete rock" effect

I think it's been mentioned around here before about nuances and ghost kicks, if that's what you're after.
