How do you build programs for melodic instruments?

The manual does not seem to go into programing instruments other then drums/sample slices. I know how 16 levels/tune works but I want to be able lay a piano or horn sample (for example) across my 88 key digital piano that I'm using to control my MPC 1000. Am I limited to the 16*4=64 notes of the pads? Any tips in this area are appreciated!

I'm not sure if there's an easy way to spread a sample chromatically, I'm sure you can. A 1000 with the jjOS should be able to. The manual way to do it is to pitch the pads and create a blank chromatic program. You aren't restricted to the pad number (16x4x4 banks) a keyboard MIDI out connected to your MPC MIDI in will allow for any key on an 88 key keyboard. Older akai samplers such as the S900 and 950 as well as ensoniq samplers like the EPS and ASR are more capable of doing chromatic programs quickly that's why alot of producers still have them. I hope this helps some.

Thanks Fung! There is a pre-set program on my MPC called M-bass (plus a couple other melodic instrument programs) so I know this can be done. I'm wondering if most of the people on this forum use their MPCS for drums and chopped phrases and not so much for pitched intruments?

instrument program rather than drum program, think you might need jjos for that though, dunno never used the akai os on the 1000
