16 bars vs 24 bars

I wanted to see if folks had a preference over the other.
I used to do a lot of 3x16 bar verses, but I have been liking 2x24's more and more.

I know it depends on the type of song that it is and what fits and what doesn't, but just for argument sake what do you usually prefer? 16 bar verses or 24 bar verses?

3 Bar verses. All in 3/4 time signature. Quantization must be off. Drop in a 5 Bar hook here and there - of course in 7/8 time signature.

Record vocals, strip tracks, build around artist..

16 is good if u just start writing rhymes and recording tracks. Also more of the radio format IMO.
I prefer 24 bars for skilled mc's. If they are skilled and creative in how to keep it alive.

2 or 3 x 16, but with a 4 or 8 intro part and a 4 or 8 bridge part.

i like doing the pre rhyme before the 16..

oh and also progressive hooks, like same flow but switchin up the words and direction as the song progresses. gives way more depth than just repeating the same hook.

Since i write to most of the stuff i make i just do whatever i feel.I don't think there should be a formula to it.But to each his own.

But I'm at work, bored ... so I'll bite.

The amount of bars really doesn't matter. What matters the most is the balance in composition. The last thing you want in a song is an unsettling format. The reason why people gravitate toward 16 bars so much is due to its pleasant nature geometrically.

As any other art form, a canvas itself wants to be balanced, and if you can focus and achieve that, then you will always be heading in the right direction.

There are thousands of books you can read in various mediums that can help with this and related subjects.

i usually do 2-3 x 16 verses

i havent worked with any mc's before, but i do some remixes here and there so thats usually the type of flow i use

i usually say wht i have to say in 2 24's. 2 16's never seems like its enough and 3 16's sometimes is overboard (depending on the song/hook and other shit) . just my imo though

2x24=3x16=48

Failed or not, there have been some good ideas expressed on the matter here in my opinion, including yours. I agree with what your saying.
Don't get me wrong, I like to experiment just as much as the next person, and don't like to be confined to one or the other by any means. It was more of an inquiry on how 16/24 stacked up against one another. Also I should have stated particularly pertaining to hiphop.
