technics 1200mk2 not picking up vocals on vinyl problem

this is what i put in google and nothin came up, so here i am. i have a second hand technic table with a nightclub cart/sty. everything looks to be in good condition. when i play an album with vocals they seem to be drowned out way in the background. whats the deal? my first idea is to replace cart/sty, then tonearm, rca, etc if thats the case. any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you hear both left and right outputs as stereo? I'd check all the connections first. Starting with those on your headshell/cart.

Only thing I can think of is check the wiring in the headshell to make sure the right wires go to the right pins on the cartridge, so you don't have any phase cancellation.


White = left channel positive
Red = right channel positive
Blue = left channel negative
Green = right channel negative

Be careful. That stuff is awfully delicate.

Definitely check the head shell wires, then the 4 headshell contacts and then the 4 inner tonearm contacts for the headshell.
And for the love of Gawd... DON"T LICK THE HEADSHELL CONTACTS!!!! Not only is it nasty but it corrodes the headshell and tone arm contacts. I could have kicked my friends azz for doing that on my Ortofons!!

but i have to lick the contacts all the times when i remove my ortofon concorde headshell, there's always a problem that goes from "one of the channels doesn't work" to "no sound came out from the speakers" , don't know if it is a ortofon heads problem
last week i was at a friends place to platy some funk records and when i put my heads on the technics there was no sound... absolutely nothing, i was thinking tat it was a mixer problem but then i tried to lick the heads contacts to seee if it was the problem
it never happened to you Juke and if yes how do you solve the problem? do you use an antistatic spray or what?

pull one of the rca plugs (left or right doesnt matter right now) from your mixer. do you hear the vocals now?

im just gunna replace the whole headshell with a whitelabel on friday and feel it out. i think it is the needle and lead cables

i really had no idea of the damage that i could do in that way
i've cleaned the contacts of both the shell and the tonearm with a spray

Your probably right, but I've been doing it for the last 15 years with no problems.
I guess, if you do lick the contacts, don't slob lick em. Suck the extra juice off ya tongue first! HAHA!

could someone tell me what's the point of licking the headshell contacts ?

double triple quadruple check the wiring on the cartridge. You would be surprised how many times you can look at it and it look correct but actually be wrong. I know this from 6 months of cursing out an old deck and one day realizing that I was wrong the whole time.
