question about hooking up three things

so i have this keyboard i received as a gift.
it doesn't have midi ports but just a usb
it works fine if im just using it in pro tools but i wanted to see if i could somehow use it in conjunction with my mpc1000.

here's what i did:
i plugged the keyboard via USB into my computer
then i loaded up pro tools and set it up using xpand so i could hear the sounds come out my monitors when i played the keyboard
then i tried plugging the outs from my interface(where i was plugging the monitors in) into the record ins on the mpc

my reasoning was that the sound was going to coming out of the speakers anyway

it didnt work

any ideas or if its even possible to hook up this keyboard(only has usb) pro tools, and my mpc 1000

I don't think that's right.

In most DAWs you can set up a channel to receive on one port, and transmit on another. In this way, set up an instrument track to receive midi on the USB device, then have that same track transmit the midi to your mpc. Now you can trigger your mpc with the keyboard.

Though I'm a little confused what you are trying to accomplish really. You first start off talking about MIDI, then start talking about audio record ins.

Which is it? Audio or MIDI?

If you are trying to TRIGGER notes in protools, and then sample those / pass them through the MPC, then you've basically got it. Of course you will then need to connect your mpc to your speakers, and I believe on the 1000 there is a 'pass through audio' mode you would have to enter. Or just go into sample mode and sample away.

Take all of this with a grain of salt - I can do this in Logic but I am not as well versed in ProTools.

im gonna try some stuff out and ill report back

Midi goes into Pro Tools via USB cable.

Midi Thru Pro Tools and out to selected port on your midi interface. (you do have one, right?)

Midi output port of your midi interface to an MPC midi input.

When you press a key on the keyboard the midi data (note on, velocity, pitch, duration, note off) goes 'thru' the computer and back out via your midi interface to your MPC.

Don't expect your sequence timing to be as tight as it would be using a direct midi connected keyboard.

so ive got the keyboard via usb plugged into the computer

i have a midi cable going out from my audio interface to the midi in on my mpc


im trying to use xpand for the sounds

what kind of track do i need to use in pro tools and on the mpc?

i guess i should turn the midi sync on (beat clock)

do i need an audio cable going from the output of my interface into the mpc?

sorry, im good at using records and tracking out but terrible when it comes to syncing shit together



ive also got my mpc hooked up through a dj mixer going to another set of speakers separate from my monitors
i can play the keyboard and hear the sound come from the computer monitors but cant hear it from the speakers my mpc is hooked up to

any thoughts would be amazing

Sorry I haven't used PT for a couple years now, never did really agree with that DAW.

If you start another thread with PRO TOOLS in the title, you'll get help from someone who knows.

Carry out a search first, I've seen a thousand PT questions posted in here...

1. Instrument tracks all round, unless programming drums inside the MPC.

2. You don't need to sync if all sequencing is done on MPC.

3. Audio cables go from MPC main outs to inputs on your audio interface.

(which interface you using?)
