I'm sitting here reading the specs on the Elektron Octatrack, and its like "Damn, not another slicer..." I mean what do you do when you have a sample like this:

1xxx2xxx3xxx4xxx

and you want make the following samples:

1xxx2
x2xxx3x
xx3xx
4xx

Come on developers, get out that box... Not everyone starts with a perfectly cut loop of some multiple of one whole bar. Not everyone wants to de/reconstruct said loop. Why is it that slicing into equal segments or slicing on the transients are the only options? Why is it that they all seem to think that nobody would ever want the same segment of audio to be in two or more slices?

Seriously... ???

+100000000

just give me a waveform and some vertical bars
hell, let me hit a button in realtime to lay them down roughly and then i'll fine tune them 1 at a time....

It's the only feature I would kill for.

Octartack allows slicing to a grid, to transients , and to user definable points at any point in the loop.

Been keeping an eye on the development of the Octatrack for a long while now - and while the OS is still not fully mature it looks very interesting.

Its Elektrons consistent ability of 'out the box' thinking and implementation that makes me like their products so much.

Its just a pity that %99 of the demos on Youtube etc seem to be a bloody racket!

mmm, what about the mark button on the BOSS/ROLAND SP-series?

I mean, just saying... :-D

I know and that's what makes their insistence on slicing so disappointing. Because in essence, slicing is nothing more than chopping with self-imposed restrictions. The biggest restriction being that one slice must begin where the previous one ends. Everything else that (and any other) machine does is built on top of how you manipulate samples at the base level. And that's why its so crucial...

Like I just can't for the life of me understand why anything that calls itself a sampler cannot freely address several different regions of any sample without any self-imposed limitations. And I cannot understand why developers avoid that paradigm like the plague... As if conceptual ease of use is gonna sell more units. NO! The hardcore samplists are the only ones still buying hardware! The hardcore samplists are the only ones still SAMPLING!!!

Its 2011. The ASR-10 is almost 20 years old FFS...

Man I'd kill for that... In the meantime, there's always spinning the record back and sampling snippets... LOL... 2011...

So damn right! and the software slicers have just the same limitation  I was so happy when I found that vemberaudio shortcircuit sampler VST cause it was the only one that allowed to have a long sample, set slice points manually, change then into individual zones but left the ability to change the start and/or endpoint. So sad that cleas (the programmer) didnt continue developing it :(
If this function would be on hardware it would be a big reason for me to buy. Since then: znedit, DOIT :)

Ah - ok I get you, But it is my understanding (at least reading from the manual) that the same sample can be loaded to two different sample slots and chopped completely independently and manipulated in real time independently from each other.

Right I saw that, and thats the usual workaround for slicers. I know I'm being picky, but its just irritating...

edit: and this isn't just about the octatrack. If I had the dough (or the need) I'd get one today, because it still reads like its dope as hell.
By MCL Tue Mar 01, 2011 1:41 am
^ Yeah - I get you,

Been watching it with interest - Will probably get one - I can feel it happening already - just want to wait until the OS matures a bit more.

Its still in 'Beta' I suppose at the moment - the OS is still at point releases - when OS 1.0 drops and a few more bugs are ironed out I will probably jump on it then.

But I was bitten by the Machinedrum bug 9 years ago (wow - its really been that long?!) And its still a great joy to use, the sequencer is just amazingly well thought out, and still updated regularly by Elektron - so I have confidence that they will add a whole lot more to Octatrack

I think it would be fine when we have the possibility to explode a NDC choped sample into separate samples....
By séance Tue Mar 01, 2011 8:33 pm
Nym have you kept a correspondence with jj? If so, maybe a suggestion is in order.
By dtaa pla muk Tue Mar 01, 2011 9:50 pm
yeah, i have a line to jj but i don't use it much. i've been straight up spoiled over the years.
i think the "pad hit to slice" thing has been requested over the years - by mp3, even? i forget who sired that idea.
i'm extremely fast and comfortable with the current slice system in jjos2 because my pads never have more than 1 note in the waveform...i chop note per note, every time, or else i use an audio track. i don't even use the SLICE function, really, i just use DIVIDE and DIVIDE again until every section is broken into single note chops, then xfade loop them so that they last as long a i want. lo-fi elastic audio, stays in time when you change tempo or tune.

what we need is someone to create a softsampler that isn't a playback device like kontakt
that doesn't try to do EVERYTHING drum related like battery
and can load more than 1 sample at a time (crossfade loop synth by expert sleepers)
