I'd like to start by By Asking:

1) How much success You've had Filtering out
Bassline ala Pete Rock and Large Professor??

2)How do Basslines them From Distorting To much ??

3)What the best way to Isolate a bassline on the Dj Mixer or on the Track Board, berfore Sampling???

Playing them on Keyboards:

1) What kind of Board do you use to Play Basses Analog (Moog, Oberheim)

or Regular Boards Like the Trition, MO'Phat ,Motif ,etc

2) What's you favorite board to do Basslines on???

I filter my shit then add A bass over it from sample or THE NORD

I lovethe filter sound if placed right,,

When you filter the bass out it only really takes up a certain freq since your cutting alot out...
so thats when when you really listen to the pete rock shit...

you notice his filtered shit is like the filling on the Baseline
example...He uses a bass hit from some other record- that hits on the one,
then the filtered bassline already playing continues the line...
Meaning it sounds like its only a filtered bassline being played..

So you can just record the bass hit on the one and the filtered part nakes you sound like you played all those notes also..


key board basslines need to be run through some preamps or a LA-2A then mic'd through an amp...

If you dont mic the Bassline through an amp...and then mix the direct and the mic
If there is no Air in the Mix meaning you record the keyboard straight from its outputs you are gonna get a flat sound even with eq...

You need that Breathing of the speaker from a cabinet and room noise etc..

My favorite....I have a sub that only plays up to 80hz

I mic the sub with a neumann U-87 and a 1000 watt amp pumping the sub

Then I mix the direct

well this dosnt really answer any of your questions but when i first got the Roland MBD-1 i was in love. i use that a lot cause it has many many tight bass and bass guitar instruments/sounds

i use that most of the time.

sometimes i find that if you filter a sample and add a lil reverb to make a bassline, you dont end up with bass but just a bass sound that you can't feel.

i have a ms2000 analog modeling synth but i really have been usin my mpc for the bass wit records. With recycle u can cut all the highs and boost the lows and the gain to make a phat warm rich bass sounds. The mpc can do this wit its low pass filter but ur best bet would be to get a wave editor that can support DX and VST plugins and get a filter like ohmforce's fromage, its free, then u can make those fat soundin bass's outta say a horn sample. just try to listen to the basslines in songs and try to seperate it outta the main mix in ur head. then i chop it up into pieces and take the good cuts and make a program and lay em in over my melodies.

i use sampled bass program. I also use my triton basses, but i have a special programed sub bass of mine that i use....the stock basses dont do it for me.

ALL round, I think the cheapest basses that can be freaked, and altered well are mophatt basses. from the emu mophatt module. I like its sub bass, and with the filters you can get some nice characteristic to them.

The mophatt is great because you can layer the bass sounds, and apply a filter to each layer......you can tune one bass sample real high, add a filter to it, mess with the filter to get a nice sound and cut out some bottom end, then layer it over a sub bass, maybe filter out some top end of the sub bass. This way you can have a gap knotched out in your bass sound...i.e. the sub bass is real low, and the filtered high pitched bass gives you tone, and not much mudd in the middle. makes drums fit nice.



Filtered basslines from samples dont do it for me, but im gonna have to try the above techniques....thanks freedom.

I also use a dummy bass program on my mpc......its arranged so the midi notes and program notes correspond correctly, that way i can just load up the generic bass sound, create a bassline, then flip on my keybaord and swithc the track to midi: then i can just flip through bass sounds to find the one i want....or i can go back to my bass program.

Ohhh. Also I frequently do basslines "a la" RZA style, or mobb deep style...Da Doom.......not complex, but 2 notes that match the sample....or even just one note, and you can get a bass sound in there. Just gotta do the "da doom" or some variation, and you can put a bass tone to anything-just tune it until it works.

also wanted to let you know....personally if i play any basslines from my keyboard, i use the pads instead of the keys....if i play from the keys i dont listen as much.....but with the pads its random=i dont think of notes, i just think of what bassline fits to my samples. ALso i get more of a "drum-esk" response to the bass, sort of as if it was a drum not really a bass tone. my basslines sound more rhythmic because of the pad response.

filtered bass lines vs keyboards: sometimes your just gonna have to have a bass sample program in the mpc or use a keybaord....it makes things work faster. Sometimes filtering just doesnt work or hit real hard. But thats from my experience with just the mpc2xl filter....i guess if you had some filter module, or eq, or something with better filters. THe mophatt i have has some types of filters, that i can add bass to anything, too bad i cant run my samples through it.

You mic a 1000watt bass amp with a U87?!?!
Better becareful not to fry your mic!

P.S. Nice advice about just using the filtered bass to carry the line. But I don't think many people in this forum are going to benefit from you saying put your bass through an LA-2A?

I play everything out with my novation k-station? i'll never sample a bassline.

pisnooky i have a well nice liquid bass patch on my a station...i will use real hits but that machine is great for bass....

also use my alpha juno...v nice...

and mulitisampled bass sounds, zimmer, clearmountain, bass legends...all very nice sounds which can be tweaked into some nice natural bass sounds...

Never used the Electrix EQ killer, but I use the MFC-42 for filtered bass lines that then of course tweak shit to make things sound nice. The MFC is great for this, (I got a few extra ones that I didn't even open the box to yet, want to buy one?)

I played with the Electrix Filter Factory once or twice and I really liked it also. In my opinion the Filter Factory is better for filtering effects that you would hear house or trance music and for live DJ sets, as where the MFC is VERY well suited for production and shines in studio applications. Some people might disagree though.

For playing bass lines, I have several tricks I use to fake the funk since I am not a virtuoso on the keys. One is using the filtered bass line to get an idea, and then redo it with a board, then drop out the filtered line. I am not gonna give anyway any jems of mine though, unless some one shoots me a good one on PM.

Anyone here uses any Moog ,Arp, Oberheim or Sequential Cuircuits boards for Basslines??
