hi there!

I'm trying to play a drum loop simultaneously with the same drum loop (that is heavily compressed) that i set it to another pad..

while it's playing together, sometimes i have a phaser effect , sometimes not...

the sample is exactly the same!!!

can you help me to solve that? (I don't want that phaser effect)

I try to play the compressed drum loop together with the original on another track to another program, but i have the same results..

is it a sequence problem ? is it a problem on the simultaneous play feature?? or what??

please help!

The MPC is not sample accurate. that means if you try to play the same sample twice, you might (or might not) get phasing.

but what do you mean about sample accuracy? 44,100Khz ?? it's all the same for all the samples..

ok... let;s say that i can't do it this way....
is there a method to achieve parallel compression on mpc 5000???

if i use an external mixer ?

are samples sampled in stereo, if so would switching to mono possibly resolve this ?

Playing two of the same samples at the same time on the mpc is a pita because you get random phasing and cancelations due to the mpc randomly either playing the two samples together or not. I can only speak for my 2500 but it sounds the same as what you are describing.

It means that if the mpc plays a sample at a given time position (the downbeat of the bar, for example), there's no guarantee that it will play that sample exactly at that time position every time that given time position comes around.

In other words, if you try to play two samples at the same exact time, they will probably not play at exactly the same exact time. They will probably be off (we're talking milliseconds here). So if the two samples are copies of eachother, then they will be slightly out of phase. That's why you get phasing.

No. You can track out to your DAW and use your DAW to do parallel compression. Your DAW is sample accurate.

Wow, I have always had better timing on a MPC than a computer. It phases when the samples are perfectly in time. Not the other way around. You can also shift one drumloop forward or backward with the quantize. If your really compressing one loop the other loop should have a different frequency range.

It can be done. Resample the hard compressed drum break to a pad and layer the original dry drum on top. When you strike the pad, both drums should play at the sametime. If phasing occurs still, then pitch down a little bit on one of the drum samples.

that's a nice idea about layer the samples... but...

i got now a standard phase.. try to pitch one of them but it got a bigger phase... i can't understand it (!!!!????)..
then i just focus how to resample the drum breaks.. and i do exactly the same resample.. (same threshold)
in trim mode same sample numbers (from st:0 to end:470,431)

damn it!

Just a thought, it might or might not work.

Add a 1000 to the start point and to the end point but don't discard to one of the drums. Example, St:1000 End:471,431 That should put the drums a little bit off but stays in time.

Also lightly compressing the dry drums sometimes work. Even EQing them to beef or attenuate the drums can add or take away sounds causing phasing.

One main rule about defeating phase cancellation is to have both sounds at different frequencies. If the dry drum got thump then ask yourself, does the compressed drums need thump too? The answer is up to you and your ears. But when both drums got thump, then phasing will be present.

On the 2500, two samples sequenced at exactly the same time either play together or offset by a constant distance. This frequency of 'together' or 'offset' is totally random.
I've always wondered, because the offset is a constant, how come it can't be fixed with some sort of buffer in the software?

Creating a situation that defines phasing then asking why you are getting phasing effect is insanity. Why not compress just one drum loop? If you're trying to parallel or wet/dry compression turn the compressed signal down until you can't hear it or the phasing that occurs that much.

5000. You got it twisted, two together creates phasing. Either do what Fung said and mix to taste or you can try to change one sample so its not exactly the same as the other one. Keep it simple and just turn it down. I take it your trying to give that loop a little more punch.

No, phasing happens when two signals are of the same frequency therefore canceling out vital sounds that would've otherwise enhanced the sound, has nothing to do with timing. If you was recording guitar in one room and drums next door at the sametime and the drummer is banging so hard that his sound leaks into the guitar mic then phase will occur dumbing down the drums because the waveforms are the same.

All you need to do is adjust the frequency of one of the drums, either the dry drums or the compressed drums so both are at their own frequency. Eq and/or compression usually does the trick.
