Been trying to do one for a while but it feels a little off...

For natural sounding rolls: use different sounds from the same snare.

try using different snares and mess with the attack and decay along with velocity... it can take awhile to get it right but its not impossible to make it sound realistic

Mess around with the time sig...... for instance, make a 16 bar loop... then change each bar from a 4/4 to 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 etc..... sounds strange, but it works for me...
