Removing individual sounds/frequencies from a sample

does anybody know a way to say remove individual sounds from samples, like basslines, drums or vocals without altering the rest of the sample?

or do you need an expensive mixing board for that?

The program 'Spear' (its free) could be of use and is cool

It plots the samples frequencies into a picture, and allows you to edit (cut/time/pitch/etc) the individual frequencies in the sample.

There are several programs that help to really goin deep into frequency editing with different methods 2 of them are posted here. photosounder and spear another one would be Prosoniq SonicWorxPro. Adobe Audition can do this graphical editing too. Isolation via phase-invert is also a method but this is not flexible and you can't choose what you want to hear and what not.
But with all this stuff its always the same: The result and the way how you get what you want heavily depends on the source signal. The audio quality, how it was mixed, Which instruments play together HOW are they played and WHAT they do they play.

in regards to 'visual' audio editors, this coincidentally just popped up on cdm, and it is maybe one of the most promising techniques, though guaranteed far from perfect.

it was using a graphic editor very similar to the one i posted above. it was a cool trick. and it was far from automatic/idiot proof.

No one hear has used the melodyne software?

I guess it can do that as best as anything else.

^^^Wrong. Melodyne doesnt work on complex polyphonic material, only ployphonic instruments/voices.

Eg: melodyne can take a guitar chord apart so you can manipulate individual notes. It cant take a song and break it into drums, keys, basslines, etc.

There are quite a few universities and scientists working on algorithms that will make it possible

EQ does the trick well if you know how to eq
