When you sample do you..

...Chop em til its hard to tell where they came from or just bang out a straight loop??

Although I've done both I've got to admit that I prefer loops.

Although its a loop, i think i still keep it interesting with a few changeups here and there.

i chop by beat or note mostly always. most the time i end up with a puzzle from hell that needs piecing together, but thats apart of the fun i guess. plus i like using reverse looping to lengthen notes where possible as opposed to timestretching, using the mp kinda like a synth almost..

even if its a dope loop i will chop it into beats by force of habit, just on the off chance i can compile a bit extra out of it.

I prefer to chop samples. I don't even remember when I used the whole loop on MPC

i loop and chop the sounds with the 2000, it depends on the cases

Chop it up. Always. Eventhough when I have already decided I will use the original 'loop' beforehand. Gives me more control so I can get it tight with the timing or make it swing a little bit more.

I also loop some intresting notes sometimes like Padlock. Especially when a note is one and a half note long and want it to sustain for like a complete measure.

I actually posted this in the "your music" section because i wanted to share this (IMO) dope track but half way through my post I thought to myself,"I wonder how people feel about straight loops vs. Chopped up samples?" So this thread turned into a question instead of a "check my beat out" thread...lol

To be honest I actually do a bit of both so I'm not really partial to any "method". I agree with what "konc3pt" said: "whatever sounds good". To add to that, I might use a combination of angles (eg: pitch shift and time stretch, chop over a loop, etc...)
I guess there's more than one way 2 skin a cat?? <===I never thought about it til now but thats kind of a fcuked up saying if you think about it...

I listen. There's no reason to chop a loop if its a loop.

I think the best producers focus more on what sample and where it came from than how they chop it... and which ones they mix and match to make a new masterpiece.

i usually chop at least to 1/8th or 1/4 notes even if i end up playing the loop the same as the original.

makes the sample a little more flexible to bpm and transposing without having to timestretch and effecting the sound.

This^ .. But then a lot of times, the loop I started off with get's mixed into the background more and more (by filters, LFO's, and just plain level's) untill it becomes ambience..
