Yo folks!

I'm more and more becoming desperate... dont know how to fix it:

I got the following problem:

- I have a perfect 2 bar loop rendered from Ableton Live
- I now simply want to chop it exactly into 8 different quarter notes
- I therefore load it up into ReCycle and chop it up (perfectly matching to the grid)
- I now create a program with those single .wav files inside the MPC
- I set the master-tempo accordingly to ableton/recycle BPM

When i now simply recreate that loop (recording a 2-bar SEQ) i ALWAYS encounter that MOTHERFOCKING stuttering that i just can not take anymore. The loops just dont loop smoothly on my MPC. The stuttering is very subtle but enough for me to kill every flow.

Here is what i've tried to solve the situation:
- Play around with the BPM of the MPC (every sampler has its own timing etc.)
- Just chop the original Loop inside the MPC into equal parts
- Play around with Attack and Decay with every single file
- Chop every single quarter note in Ableton Live and render it seperatly (pain in the ass)

Nothing worked so far. Though, im kinda sure it must have to do with zero-crossings or attack and decay issues. But it sucks hard to not being able to recreate a simple loop wich is essential for the things i want to do (Playing Hardware-Only Livesets, loop based...)

Any help is very very much appreciated. I dont know if there is just one simple solution to that problem, but i couldn't find it yet and definitely did my research.

I uploaded an example of the loops and its single quarter notes here:

Thanks in advance!

audio example of the problem? :?:

is it the same everytime?

is it different each time?

is it on recording?
on playback?
are you using step edit?
are you quantising?
are the slices looped?
why does recycle matter if you can also chop in the mpc?

having a hard time understanding what the problem is.

what mpc model and OS version also? cause different models have different features and different forum members are experts on different models.

also your chops are not adding up to the same as your original so im curious how you did it.

original length = 216,402
chopped length = 218,508

it looks like yer chops are just a bit longer than the originals, maybe adding some padding at the start. (~264 samples longer maybe?)

Play with the tune/pitch of each chop while the seq is playing over and over again.

dont think you're running out of polyphony with one sample...maybe you got weird setting in T.C ?....are you recording the chopped samples with or without quntize on ?

Shame on me for not even mentioning the basics!

- MPC 1000, JJOS2

In order to just recreate the original loop i (ofc) turned quantize on, Swing on 50% and recorded the two bars on-the-fly.

@ Tapedeck

Thanks for the research - the different length of the files is some interesting info. Maybe recycle does that to the chops? However i made sure to turn down decay etc. Moreover i had the same problem with just chopping (slicing in trim mode) into 8 different files in my mpc. Hmm...

What do you exactly mean with "are the slices looped"? I didn't manipulate them in the MPC any further.

Generelly that stuttering happens to all of my loops. As mentioned before it's very subtle and for basslines and drum breaks maybe acceptable. But for anything sustained like brass or pads it's freaking me out. The fact that any loop i play back in ableton live sounds way cooler than on my mpc is definitely annoying...

Thanks for all the replies so far! It's a very helpful place here.

if you are having the same problem in recycle as you are with the mpc, and they are completely unrelated, then this sounds like user error.
you are doing something wrong, so we need to figure out what.

i still dont even have a very good idea what the problem is you are talking about. try to record the problem and let us hear it in a very noticeable case. would be helpful to hear it out of ableton and the mpc.

Aah! Ok i head to work! :)

Uploading sh!t soon. thanks so far

i've been chopping beats on hardware and software this way for 5+ years and never really encountered this??? maybe you're being too picky.... try keeping your program on MONO, or on software polyphony of sampler to 1.. and then add some drums.. adjust pitch, bpm... you should easily be able to make it sound good if you got nice chops.. are you chopping your shit up right? i just dont get what your problem is?

you cant get it to sound exactly like the original? dont chop it up then, and use the chops for the parts u want to alter (keeping it on mono) or something... there are plenty or work arounds i think u might just be overthinking this a bit

Yep, I've been saying that from the beginning too. It's a balancing act with the pitch/tune+bpm+chops.

Definitely not. I'm doing something terribly wrong... you'll agree with me on that one if you listen to the example. It must have to do something with attack, decay, release etc. but im a real greenhorn concerning that topic.

So check it out: I made a lil ZIP-file where i included the original ableton-loop, the single recycle chops and the final result of the SEQ playing in my MPC. Moreover i included a screenshot of Abletons session view as well as a screenshot of the recycle session-file.

Any help is greatly appreciated. There must be some easy and simple solution to this...

how do you create the sequence in your mpc?
step edit?
real time?
the thing is, the loop coming off your mpc is longer than the original loop.

i think maybe your samples have 'padding' at the beginning, so when you hit the pad the chop is actually delayed a little bit.
are you adjusting the start points at all?

the thing is, the chops you sent, do NOT add up to the original loop. so there is some inconsistency there - you would have to have particular start points to make sure these things add back up to the same loop.

there is about 220 samples of overlap in each chop.

my recommendation would be to, on yer mpc, set your start point for each about 220 samples into the sample, and see how that sounds.

let me just mention i could be totally wrong, because there are a lot of variables that need to be isolated ... (are these recycle or mpc chops? how is recycle set up? how is your mpc set up? how is ableton set up? how are you creating the sequence? etc etc etc - lots of stuff i cant know).

I downloaded it and checked it out. Some of your chops are in the middle of the actual horn playing.
I'm going to guess that you had those chops automatically created instead of you manually doing it?!?!

If so, QUIT IT, use your ears and chop where dead silence falls.

The horn is not playing perfectly playing where can get multiple exact same length slices.

So MANUALLY chop into horn peices, then play them back in whatever order you want in an mpc sequence.

If you want the whole loop then just place the WHOLE horn loop into the mpc and not chop anything.

Your problem from what I hear in your final mpc loop is chopping inexperience.
