Just trying to approach this in the most effective way.
So generally I like to split and isolate my samples (excluding drums) into LO pass & HI pass versions, but I have trouble finding the right balance between the two. Pre DAW, my LO pass is usually set around 20 (linked) with a fair amount of resonance, and my HI pass version can be anything to taste really.
Without compression (so far), and based on your set of monitors, what sort of freq range should I be aiming for with the LO pass? Or is it suitable to instead aim for a mid-range filter? This was the 90's Hip-Hop sound, and this is what I'm trying to achieve.
Any advice or methods that you guys use would be appreciated.
By the way this is all in the MPC, not a DAW.
