my buddy with a bass guitar is going to lend me his time to sample his bass. this is my first multi sample profram. Which notes do i need? I understand the more notes you grab the better. but should i be taking the same notes in each octave like c1 c2 f1 f2 etc etc

Depends on how exact the "emulation" you want to be.
Also keep in mind how the real bass is played. The same notes can be played with different strings. It depends on the actual bassline (and the players preference) which string is played and it will sound different.
Also when sampling keep an ear on thee Attack of the notes and try to keep the power of the pulling finger the same for every note.

I would also sample 1 set soft picked strings, 1 with normal power and another one pulling the strings hard.

For the actual notes I would sample

E-string: E G A D E G

and the same frets for every string

thanks for all your help so far.

okay, i have the notes sampled.

I did as peter piper has said and had my friend play E-string: E G A D E G and the same frets for every string. Though i'm still confused what to assign the notes as in the program because you have to specify whether the note is e1, e2, e2 etc. (the number represents octave?) how do i know? (sorry im no guitar player and my musical theory knowledge is very small)

i'm using jjsos2xl on mpc1000 to create the instrument program

:?:
Just saying, there is some usefull information in here that should come in handy somtime.
My post was more or less a bookmark.
I am too, intrested in understanding how to make multi sample INST programs.

This thread has potential to be quite educating IMO.

I've just read that the jjos2xl support velocity switching. You can use this to create a program that will play different samples of the same note (like I said soft/mid/hard) depending on how hard you play the pad.

To map the different strings on the pads exactly is not that easy (if you really want to emulate a bassplayer 100%) cause you'll need to know which string is played with the your specific bassline. Some "moves" from one note/string to the other are not really possible or a bassplayer wouldn't play it that way cause there is an easier way to play it. So you'll need to know which note is played on which string and map the specific samples to the pads.

But to be honest this method is an extreme example. The MPC is not really made for such a program. That doesn't mean it can't be done but its a lot of work and you might still be satisfied with a much easier and less complicated way of mapping even with a bass. To get a realistic paino multisample program would cause much more work.

I don't know jjos2xl so I don't know how to map the samples and if it's possible to map a sample to a range of pads/keys.
