so im making this beat and the chops are kinda off beat. the first couple bars go like this

Image

notice how they dont land on the 1? its hard for me to make them sound right with the drums, specifically the snare drum, because the beat itself doesnt land on the 2 and the 4, so the snare doesnt follow that too well. ive tried adding some rolls and such to try and make it sound better, i think i just need to listen to a track or 2 that has similar sounding stuff.

have any of you guys ever made a beat that was off beat like this?
it makes me think that its gonna be a nightmare trying to get someone to rap on it, but the sample sounds dope there, im just having trouble with the snare and stuff.

anyone have any weird beats or know of any offbeat youtube links you could link up here?

thanks

Every now and again I'll use 3/4 or 6/8 timing and nudge ticks back or forth 1 or 2 places.

Sometimes I'll delay my whole track (in triton) a few milliseconds behind or forward when using slow synths/pads.

heres the link, notice how the first chop is a beat before the snare but the second snare sounds alright?

i made a 12 bar example, the hats are pretty much just place holders at this point but the snare on the 1-2-3-4- sounds funny to me, so i added a side stick, but i dont know if i want that to be going on during the whole track. it kinda sounds too busy.

for my example structured it like this.

the first 4 bars i had no hihats and regular snares on the 2 and 4

the second 4 bars i added the hi hats to that

the third 4 bars, i added a side stick right before the first snare, and twice before the second snare.

im probably only going to use one repeating 4 bar pattern with some slight variations, but i just cant seem to get it sounding good because of that chop in the first measure.

what do you guys think?

Bang out your drums with quantize off and record it in real time for the whole track, forget chaining up sequences.

Off beat style really was artists trying to stay in time when making a track, it just became the rage later on.

honestly i didnt even notice, it sounded really good to my ears.

try adding a kick or two after every other snare or every third snare for some drum variation, but i dont think that would make it sound to busy like you mentioned before.

or set a delay up with the snares, and pan that shit to the left or right for variation. the delay will sort of "make up" for the off beat of the track.

hopefully you can understand what im getting at, because i tried to fully understand what you're trying to say hahaa

but the beat is sick as is for the example you posted, just keep doing what your doing

maybe set your piano roll with the snares (and maybe all or some of the other notes) right on the dot in time... then shift them around from there (move each snare the same amount in the same direction)

ok, thanks for the suggestions guys, im gonna try some panning or delay, and also some shift timing, and non quantize timing.

the beat i posted is actually something i just re created in logic real quick, i think the last note was wrong, but the actual beat is on my mpc, so im gonna go mess with all this in there.

i also found that the drums i were using in logic sounded better than the ones in my mp, so im gonna switch up the samples to these ones as well.

the extra snares arent necessary, and they cloud up the beat. id get rid of them

if you really want your snare to hit when your sample hits: try moving the '2' snare to the chop right before or after (before will sound best im guessing)

its completely a different rhythm, but it can work

also, if thats your sample, play around with different drum sounds.. didnt fit too wel i think

i figured it out, i took the extra snares wayyy down in volume, and added alot of space inbetween some hi hats, the extra snares now are more of a feel than a hard hit, now im just working on the hook and other sections of the beat.

thanks yall.
