It pisses me off when other musicians ask what I do and then they act like snobs if i'm not doing some arty farty revolutionizing sampling/electronic music/hip-hop sort of shit (What they usually mean is DJ Shadow/Flying Lotus soundalike stuff).

I meet too many of these people who want me to complicate things. The people I looked up to when I was into hip-hop was RZA, DJ Spinna, Madlib and DJ Premier. Head nodding shit.

You listen to their shit and it's wack as ****. Just some shit that sounds exactly the same as the shit that everyone else is putting put. Pseudo-experimental shit. They're forcing being experimental and trying hard to be different. Just as bad as Lady Gaga

Do you feel the pressure from some beatmakers and other musicians when you meet up to be experimental and do arty farty backpacker BS just for the sake of doing arty farty backpacker BS when you just want to keep it simple and funky? I mean I could make a beat out of sounds in my kitchen and the sounds of buttering toast, but I just don't feel like it... nahmeen?

If this all makes sense?

yeah, but that applies to all genres.. making music for the wrong reasons is always wack. i dont feel any pressure to do anything though

(btw i think all the people you mentioned here are true artists, and someone could try to sound like them out of snobbery too...)

and yup, trying to keep things simple is good.. any dumbass can make something complex

No pressure, you do what you like and don't care about the opinion of the rest. I've met many like that, I won't comply or give in, why should I?

Music shouldn't be sport.

First and foremost YOU should get something from what you are doing, some level of enjoyment.

Things always go in cycles and most people are sheeple, going with fashion and are more concerned with being "Cool" or part of the set. Real people/musicians can hear the unoriginality, or the fact they are clones, but at the same time some of these style producers are doing good things.

Just do you! Enjoy it and if you feel inclined, try to stand on the shoulders of pioneers and further the path. If you feel even a little more adventurous, try and jump a little higher when you're up there on those shoulders.

I never do well if I try to force myself to do a specific genre, sound, style, whatever. I've tried it before, and it doesn't work. For me at least.

whos is pressuring u or r u pressuring ur self?

do you work as part of a production company? are you signed to a lable ? is an a&r pressurising u? or is an artist ur working asking u to make flying lotus beats?

or is it the case that ur reading articles about peeps like flying lotus and dj shadow and u in ur bedroom feel like u need to make beats like that? to get on?

it depends on ur situation if ur signed and they want a certain type of track before they cut the check then make that shit and get the cash.

if ur in bedroom with no projects but ur feeling pressure then it aint that serious, make what the **** u wanna make

I tip my hat to your nod towards Isaac Newton. I've always thought 'standing on the shoulder's of giants' would be a dope album title.

Sage advice through out this thread and I'm lucky to not people like the ones you're on about.

Post some examples because I'm not hearing what you're listening to.

I've heard plenty of madlib and at no point have I thought sampling was being pushed to the limit. Not by a trillion miles.
