why do you convert drum shots to mono before you load them..

why do you all convert to mono before loading into the pads? does it give to drums a special effect or make them sound better?

or is it to save space?

I convert my drums to mono because it usually fattens them up...

If you seperated the left and right mono sounds from a stereo sample on a kick for example... One side might sound more defined while the other side might have more BOOM to it... When you convert this Stereo sound to Mono the two sides overlap and create a more lo-fi sound (fatter sound too)...

Also in most music, drums are kept dead center in the mix... For this reason Mono is perfect because it already makes it dead center...

Wow. I would have thought that you'd get a thicker sound with a stereo drum hit, but I just tried it and it does make it sound thicker. Good lookin!

Do you convert each sample to mono? or the whole drum pattern once you've sequenced it?

I mix and match drum sounds a lot... So I usually mix it to Mono before I sequence....

It actually goes something like this... I sample in stereo directly to my MPC... Thn I convert it to Mono leaving me with two audio tracks of the same drum hit... I check each Mono sample (L & R side) and see if one is better than the other (Like I said before sometimes one has more presence, but the other one has that BOOM)...

Depending on the track... I might layer both on top of each other and create a fat Mono sound... I might leave it in stereo... Or I might just use the LEFT side Mono of RIGHT side Mono...

There are no rules and different tracks call for different things... Try out some different ways and see what works for you...

Yea thats wat i thought too until i spoke to this engineer. Turns out most things are jus better in mono with the exception of a few instruments.

I convert sounds to mono using programs such as Soundconverter pro for Mac.

All my drum hits are mono (unless I want special "supa-wide screen hole in the middle" drums) Think about it... In reality it is impossible to have a "stereo" drum.

Yea I do that sometimes if I'm doin a funk remix or something... Cause a lot of the time those Funk Records have the snare faded off to like one side or just reall f*ckin wide...

So Sometimes I spread the sound out real far and just layer it with a really compressed mono snare... Usually sounds right for some really open drum loops...

all of the above plus as far as tracking if you have a stereo sound it takes up 2 outs and mono sounds conserve memory space.

i THINK YOU CAN DO THIS IN THE MPC ITSELF, BY GOING TO THE SAMPLE EDIT, TRIM AND THEN CHOOSE EDIT.... GO THROUGH THE OPTIONS AND ON IS MONO TO STEREO, THE OTHER, STEREO TO MONO

Jeez, Mattmatiks is a herb.

Converting Stereo to Mono in the MPC doesnt mix the two together. As a matter of fact, it says right there on the screen that it splits it into its individual L and R sounds.

Christ. Learn to read.

You can layer the Left side sample on to the right side sample to Fatten it though.

cos generally drums are mono instruments and i also dont want mad panning so stuff sounds ok in practically mono club systems....
