Jamaican Kicks

Alright.. Here's the deal... I got this awesome Augustus Pablo loop... I'm tryin to layer drums on top of it... The snare is beautiful... The hi-hats are nice...

But my kick is all off... I can't figure it out... None of my usual kicks sound right...

I got a snappy kicks that I applied the low-end theory to... It won't work...

Tried to make a deep kick into a sub... It doesn't sound right...

Tried re-sampling to 12 Bits for a deeper sound... Nothign works...

Every kick I tried came out too strong in the mix... Like you heard it too much and it wasn't mixing in...

So I figured, alright, I'll just use the low-pass filter to get only the bottom end from my kick... Then the kick has no punch or just sounds stupid...

Any suggestions???

try reversing a kick? i dunno . . . first thing that came to mind . . .

I actually got it... I applied the low-end theory in a different way... I played with the tuning of the two kicks till it sat right in the mix... Took me a while, but I did it...

Also for all reggae they are using a one drop which is the

Kick and snare simultaneously hitting on the three count..

So its 1 2 3-Kick snare 4..

ITs a basic jamacian riddim
It helps to fit the kicks in the mix where they where supposed to go in the timing

But yea I know that they also use a big reverb on the kick..
Just enough to add that huge sound

Yea... I actually wnted to add a hip-hop feel to it... So I added my own rhythm... I hate to just loop a sample, but in this case I need to... I might just let my bro spit right over the sample...

But yea the reverb thing is a trcik that I picked up when listening to this album.. All their drums soudn real big... They don't exactly hit as hard as other ypes of music, but they have a huge sound... It's all about rverb and Echo Chambers on a lot of those records...

i use an acoustic with a subby kick layered v quietly underneath just for oomph...maybe eq out the low mids to take the presence down...
