Serato kills SL...all Serato DJ now

Any other Serato users out there want to weigh in? Man, I'll hafta finally upgrade my SL1 for a new interface if I want to check the new features...but honestly, this gray haired, vinyl loving bedroom DJ doesn't quite know how I feel about this yet. I know, I know, get with the times old man...but corporations seem laser focused on taking alot of the talent/skill out of music these days. Sync. They finally did it. Gotta keep up with the Jones' aka Traktor I suppose. Seriously kids. Stay off my lawn!!!

new features..... slip mode (?) and sync.

SSL is flawless for me. my 57 is a champ. 2 dropouts over the course of 3+ years.

im not worried. but it seems like a lot of ppl are having a tuff time wrapping their head around the concept of 'out with the old, in with the new'

yea yea yea my 57 is usb 1.1. so is my MBP.

I wouldnt mind using the 4 channel mixer tho. looks cool.

i didn't even know scratch live existed anymore.

do you guys only use mp3s?

everyone i know on the sl and sl1 stick to those compressed files....


maybe with the newer hardware it will be more favorable to actually use larger files?

or not....

It's been feasible to use larger files for a long time now. You just need a 7200 RPM HD to keep it flowing smoother and a decent front side data bus on your computer, mainly cats just don't care.

Well encoded 256/320 kbps files can be decent in a digital vinyl club situation. But with a GB of costing less than 50 cents, I'd really like to seeing people use full resolution files more and refuse to go under the max 320kbps encoding barrier on compressed files.

usb 1.1 has to be a bottleneck at some point also id imagine.....

i always fancied a rackmount pc but never got into copping or building one......

I'm startin to think Serato are a bunch of twats. I got a Xone:Dx with Itch, Serato dropped us Xone users like a hot brick and refused to give us DJ even when all the Xone users offered to pay. Xone was their flagship deck on release but it was **** You after only 18 months. It also happened to a couple of other platforms too.

Even if Serato had even more features and toys I would recommend Traktor because NI is inclusive and supportive. Serato will ditch any of their users if it can't be arsed with them, without a second thought.

I actually have a 7200RPM laptop, and it costs peanuts to replace a 5400. A lot of people use an external for Serato, and even though mainstream vendors stopped listing RPM a few years ago to cover their tracks on the 5400RPM ones, they are still out there, just takes mad Googling to get a confirmed spec. The higher quality Lacie's and Buffalo drives of the world will list the spec though.

The USB 1.1 isn't going to be an issue on the drives as ports and drives have been USB 2.0 for years now. Even if the Serato interface is 1.1 still no real hinderance, as you're only dealing with 2-4 stereo files at a time as opposed to a whole DAW session.

And I agree with LZ. A lot of Serato users do not realize Traktor is the business.

SL1's the only serato box with USB1 and that's almost 10 years old now. After that SL3, SL2 and SL4 have been released. Using Apple Lossless files (converted either from wav or flac) all the time with no problems on a late 2007 macbook.

i thought they went with slower drives in laptops due to heat issues via no airflow cooling in such a cramped chassis......

ssd time for sure...

for an external, i just got a thermaltake enclosure with active cooling(a fan lol) and bought my own WD black hd to put in it....

a few years old, but does the trick... those 600gig WD blacks were supposed to be good quality and fast drives....

if i were to try to get back into scratching (i never got very far with it) i'd go with mixxx

but really...who wants to listen to tons of scratching anymore? it's like parsley. looks nice on the plate but you're not supposed to eat it.
no disrespect, as it's hard as hell and i'm no good at it.

Im using serato dj with all the new effects with the numark ns6. I love the new effects! I used to have two tech 1200s and sl4. The only thing I hope they add now is the bridge so I can use ableton with Serato Dj.
