How do you work with drum breaks (on your 1K)?

Not sure why, but I'm just now starting to get around to playing with drum breaks. I don't really like to let them loop so I'm curious how you guys pitch/chop your breaks up. Not looking for any "secret voodoo" sh*t here. Just straight up, from the ground up basics. For some reason, I've never played around with breaks much on my MPC. Did ALL the time on the OctaTrack. For some reason I feel afraid to start getting in there too much on the MPC.

Time to change that.

Just chop them up in 8th notes or one shots. Can also do it in 4th notes or 16th notes. Whatever to get the desired results. Basically a case of trial and error to find out what works in what kind of situation.

Right on, my friend. Wish the MPC had auto-timestretch. Would help out find a fun pitch/BPM for the break. Guess I could always pitch first, tap tempo then slice?

That's a method you could apply. The MPC1k is quite primitive when it comes down to pitch shifting/ time stretching. I sometimes load up an already chopped up drum break and pitch shift/ time stretch each chop individually. If you have a DAW you can also stretch and pitch in your DAW, then load it up in the mp and chop it up.

True that. I DO have BeatCleaver. Should probably use that thing.

Back in the days dudes used the technique of breaks starting with the snare and ending it just when the next snare hits, and then repeat.

This leaves you with something you can quantize into a perfect snare rythm but still have the flow and swing in the rest of the break.

So they would chop with a snare "on the one" and end on another snare hit?
Not sure if it's my sleeplessness or not but the reasoning behind that is going right over my head.

Instead of chopping this into 1/8 or 1/16 or whatever, you just use the

-/BappchickaBoomBoom/-
Loop that, or sequence it pn the 2 and 4 resulting in a one bar loop...
