Going to be adding a synth into my arsenal at the beginning of the year. I like the sounds the slim has, curious about the bass sounds within the unit and if you've run any of your beats or music through the "IN" and used its filters? Its a moog so I'm pretty convinced its what I want. Just want someone to push me a little bit more to pull the trigger :smoker:

thanks,

Ive owned the slim phatty pretty much since it came out. I've used it a lot on my beats... cant get enough of the bass and its sort of brash at the high end but I love all of its characteristics. it has bite. the filter and OL (overload) circuit are dumb sick. I've driven all sorts of stuff thru the input to the filter. its one of the most classic filters out there EVER. cant go wrong. plus the filter along in a moogerfooger package will cost $300 but the slim has it in it and can be used on external source.

check this video where I demo'd using it with mpc 5000, ipad/animoog. about 3 minutes in you can really get a sense of it.

awesome, I think i'll have to see what boxing day looks like at these stores and pick one up.

Are you sampling the moog into the MPC?

@lamp I read bboytechreport all the time, its actually my splash page when I open up chrome, must have missed this one though good lookin'

yup i sample it into the MPC. sometimes via analog inputs and sometimes via the RME interface thru adat connection. either way sounds good.

btw (both of you)
thanks for the support for bboytechreport
much appreciated

HI Fork,
I decided against it because I did not like that there are some functions that you can't access immediately with the buttons and knobs. It is minor but for me I like it when every function has it knob or button right there.
I believe the sub phatty doesn't have hidden functions. The minitaur doesn't as well. I bought the minitaur however the sub phatty wasn't out at the time or I would have gotten that instead and spent the extra cash.
Minitaur is a thunderous bass by the way. I find I have to tone it down.

Cheers,
Ian

Good point Ian. If your plan is to perform or tweak multiple parameters at once even in the studio the Slim interface may not be your thing. Same is true of the phatty line in general. The little phatty is most like the slim in that regard but even the Sub phatty has what they specifically refer to as "under the hood" features where you may need to use a key combos to get to them. Still the Sub is most knobby of the phatty's but they all have features that are not readily available or assigned to a knob 1 to 1. If you arent a performing artist this likely wont make much difference. The minitaur on the other hand is a different beast all together. it is dope but it is a bass machine. phatty's a re bit more flexible in some regards. but if knobs are a concern it beats the phatty there. some folks would say just get both (oh wait is this the gear slutz forum?)

I have one .
It is a moog , sounds like a moog , no question about it.
Huge bass sounds , FX , leads but no insane stuff as it is a very limited synth compared to another.
Well built and easy to use.

However , i wouldn't recommend it as a first analog synth . Let me explain : to enjoy the possibilities and fonctionnalities of a good old analog synth you must understand how it works (LFO , enveloppes , vco , freqmod , sync , cutoff , res , routing , etc)
and the slim phatty is not the best synth to learn as there isn't one knob for each fonction and therefore you can't "see" your patch right away and it can be frustrating when you're learning how to operate that kind of thing. Plus you got a few fonctions (that you gonna need, believe me) hidden in a submenu .

And also the fact that it has memories doesn't force you to learn the damn thing and you may tend to rely on presets too much. And presets are bad .

If you already know a lot about analog synth and already have one i would say it's a great complement but if not you may consider something more straightforward to start with (minibrute for instance)

my 2cts

be careful :

the subphatty feels great but doesn't have the trademark moog sound (it leans towards a more aggressive sound a la minibrute/MS20) , great synth overall.

The minitaur is limited in its range , you can't go very high with it as it's a bass module.

Great point.

So I'd say if you have to get your hands on a great analog with presets, slim phatty. yeah its not truly the learners analog synth. so if you plan to not rely on or use presets as a starting point for basic tweaking, i'd go with a microbrute or something. As a matter of fact unless you are dead set on the moog sound the microbrute might be a serious consideration. Good synth learning with knobs and big ass sound for the loot. it costs like a 1/3 of the slim phatty price. but it does not sound like a moog. so be sure before you move on it.
