Advise on sampling from 7inch over 12inch

Can anyone with experience tell me whether i would notice much of a difference in quality when sampling from 7 inch singles rather than 12 inch singles.

I'm using MPC-Ren and want to maintain the highest quality samples possible.

Hi,

They share the same "technology" (=vinyl) so, NO, AFAIK there should be no difference.. since its exactly the same, only other size.

You better focus on the Needles, cables and mixer stuff..

That said, why dont you just try and see if your opinion differs?

7" is smaller, so grooves are more compressed compared to 12". The bigger grooves allow for the sound to be cut at higher levels, so I would assume sound quality can be potentially better on a 12".

I was inclined to think the same 'mpc tutor', I just wasn't sure how much of a difference it would make and if there would be a difference in volume also.

Well, I have used plenty of them both, and they never are the same. This doenst only depend on the size in inches, but I think more important is the manufacturer/presser and the thickness (is this a word?) of the material. I never heared really much differences and besides that, you can get any sound out of anything as long as you now what you're doing.

If you're purely after "sound quality" you shouldnt be worried about inches but I think it's better to look at setting of different hardware and it's setup. You will find vinyl only once, and you wont be in the luxurious position to buy your hot samples in every shape and size!

A 12" will generally sound better based on the simple principle that an ever decreasing circle will put different stresses on the groove as the needle approaches the centre of the record.

This is why you often get albums with a less dynamic tune as the last track on each side.

This is true though. You still shouldnt mind IMO, as you will never be able to change this facts..

Depends...If you mean like on a regular album, it might be about the same, if u mean a 12" single, then it WILL sound better (or can, depending on equip). I have a 12" that is only 5 1/2 min and takes up almost a whole side of a record. Obviously that will sound better. Its like using tape at a slower speed, more media is eaten up but u gain sound quality

Other than that, do a comparison and hear for yourself. As you said yourself.
Personally, I do find 7" (45s for that matter I guess) to be grittier than a good 12" 33.
Note that I say: good 12"
There shouldn't be more than 20 - 25. minutes of music per side..

One fact is that the dynamic range and especially bass respons becomes lesser towards the end of the record.

My 45s usually give less overall quality and more grittiness but I think its bc most my 45s are used and heavily worn already lol, also from earlier time periods than a lot of my 12 inches. But as far as a mint 45 and a mint 12inch go I think by ear that 12 inch sounds better for some reason, I don't know why.
