I'm not writing this as a diss to the low pass drums and hi hats and snares. I'm not dissing the Jazz samples or dark sample selections. This is my very generic description of the "Boom Bap" sound. Im from this Era. I came up in this Era.
I recently was involved in a Underground Hip Hop Summit of minds discussing Underground hip hop, in the circle of emcees, that are turning their ears away from selecting beats like this to rhyme to. They say they get dissed on their choice of beats because the drums and hi hats and snares sound too muggy sounding. They say the Main sample of choice ie melody and looped rhythms, other than the way the drum sounds, is dope still. Most of them, more or less, pleaded for cleaner sounding drums. These emcees were merely describing feedback and comments from underground hip hop listeners of their albums and songs.
Have any of you heard comments like this in your city? If so, do you try to experiment or cater to the cleaner drum styles? If you have, or are, how are emcees responding? Are you getting dissed on your sound or are your beats getting passed up and shot down?
