Recording Analog Synths

Does everyone have a preference between DI box or Preamp when recording Analog Synthesizers? Currently I am playing my Moog Voyager and when I am putting the fader all the way up on my X desk it's still pretty low compared to my mpc. Should I add a DI box to my signal chain or a preamp from the synth's outputs?

If you google for low output volume and moog, there is quite a few results from people having problems with low levels coming from their moog synths. I'd make sure first it's not a problem with the moog before investing in a pre-amp or DI box. I've got an SE-1X and never had volume problems. It's easily as loud as my drum machines / sound modules. You shouldn't need an extra pre-amp IMO.

There's also a switch on the back of the Voyager that sets the outputs for either -10db or +4db. Make sure it matches the inputs on your X Desk. That should bring the levels up to match. The Voyager is definitely capable of pumping out enough volume, my Master Volume knob rarely goes past 12 o'clock.

I have not had this issue but its probably worth checking to see if your model voyager matches the set of serial numbers that had a recall recently. could be related.

Talked to Moog Support doing a factory reset restored the output volume. Now it's aggressive and loud again. I have the voyager performer edition and all is well now.
