off beat loop/beats

just a question. i was watching some inteview and they mentioned how rza was making early wu tang beats off beat on purpose. when i hear them they sound on beat to me. so dont know if they mean that he just had quantize off or the swing of the drums or if he made beats in different time signatures than the typical 4/4. anyone have any examples of some good offbeat songs? i wana try to make some and learn something new ;\

Try with Raekwon's Criminology. At the end of the song is very plain to see.

I've heard that it was very funny seeing him hitting pads as if he was drunk while programming his drums.

One of the best things about early RZA production is how everything is off-beat & off-key, but somehow it just all works. Another fun thing to do is chop drum loops and tune them into your track by ear, creates all kind of little fluctuations in the beat.

What if I told you off beat style is a myth and it was because RZA really didn't get deep enough with his machines to learn them correctly to even make smooth transitional cohesive beats.
