What's the deal y'all? I hope some of you more advanced heads can shed a little light on this one:

I've got a hot ass sample that has kick drums in it (about 3 or 4 of them). What I'm trying to do is get C.E.P. to filter out these kicks to a minimum so I can just pop this sample back in the MP and do my thing. I've already sampled it with the low end Eq from my stereo all the way down so that bass is to a minimum but that little thump is still there. The cut up and pattern I got in mind for the sample is one in which my kick will not cover the sample's kick.

The real question is this: What frequeny ranges does the general acoustic kick drum cover? What's the best way to try to kill it's "thump"? - Graphic EQ/Parametric EQ or Notch Filter? Keep in mind that I'm not trying to kill the sample's ambience. I know C.E.P. but the results I'm getting right now are not satisfactory with this one right here.

roll off the low end at around 50 hz and see what's up with your sample then. you may want to shelve your lows or throw in a high pass filter... just experiement until you can get the best sound (remember, you may not get it 10000% perfect-- the idea is to get it as best you can). also, try GATING your chopped up samples to prevent those lower frequencies from surfacing. hope that helps.

peace.

A lot of punchy kicks can go from 5k to 15k, which are usually the attack, but the meat of most kicks are from the subsonics to about 250hz. It all depend on what type of kick do you want. Like do you want a tight kick, loose kick, hard kick, soft kick, strong kick, weak supporting kick, bright kick, dark kick, full kick? You might need to work with the attack/decay as well as the filtering and use some compression.

To remove the thump try a parametric with a variable bandwidth. It sounds like you want to remove some of the low mids from 100hz to 300hz.

BTW check out the manual for the akai s950. It has a section on the frequency range of common sounds. Kick drums are mentioned. Also if you have a sound editor like Cool edit pro, you can do a spectrum analysis of a kick you like. It will show you the frequency components of the sound.

Thanx y'all. (Appreciated) :D I'll try the suggestions when I get home (I'm at work right now).
I'll hit up with another reply when I try the techniques y'all recommended.
