what are some of the common chords for hiphop? i play samples at different notes but i am no piano player..where do i get more multisamples for my mpc2kxl? i allready have the ones tutor sells...interesting toipic. peace.

No need to BE a piano player to make hiphop, although you'll get better and better at it the more you do it. I'm not the type to be able to play off of sheet music, but I can lay shit down. I did that whole "go by ear" business, seems to work ok. As far as common chords, I don't think there are any. Just be on "key" with the beat. And off key, when you feeling like a rebel! Just my opinion.

sounds dumb, but i learned how to read/write sheet music, understand notes, and chord progression and its important if you intend on attending musical school or gettin a job dealing with music

Co-sign...I got this book. Its like a pre music theory class. To everybody that want to know the basics of music from chords, to melodies and bass lines to time sigs and notation, this is a good book. Alot of peole dont want to learn music theory because they think they are gona start thinking to much when making music but this book will give a good intro to it all. Once you get this book and read then then i would say get one of the more complex music theory books.

Read it once all the way through; then read it again sitting down next to your keyboard.

You can play chords and progressions as long as it is musically correct.
I have played by ear but the stakes are so much higher now as far as
what hip-hop beats demand musically. I really need to learn the scales
I probably played a diminished 5th and didnt even know what I was
playing and you really need to know at least I do but I do very well
especially when I play classical pieces and Britsh Rock.

^^^yeah, music theory is good to know for hiphop.....not that you really need it, but you can match samples better. Like if you wanna play a bassline to a sample...and you realized that they are playing a "such and such progression" like 1-4-5. And you know the root note is D, you can pick D Major (or minor or whatever) Then play the root notes of the chords that are being played.

Alot of dudes do this by ear, and sometimes its alot easier. But it helps, because say you found the Root note of a sample, but you wanted to know what the 4rth or 5th is above it, you still need to know or at least realize how to figure it out.


And sometimes you just wannt to make keyoard beats. WEll you need to start somewhere, so say you did sample just a bassline. Youhave to figure out what notes sound good with it.

Or you came up with a melody and want to match chords to it, or vice versa.

^^^Everything you said is true. Because I be having a hard time. I get by doing it by ear, but I'd love to just be able to have the knowledge behind it.

yea I know alot of people that don't wanna learn music, all they wanna do is just develop an ear for chords and learn to play the keys good.
