this may have been asked before but cant figure out how to make this work, i am trying to get a swing for a house track but i want the drums to gallop what would be a good swing setting for this or how can i get that sort of effect, would it be in the pattern of the drums or the swing.

i guess what im lookin for is like a techno hard house feel, just cant figure this out,
can i get some help

thanks much appreciated.

I think it would be best to try and program it how you want it as best you can then add some swing.

Both, record using 1/16(3) and/or 1/32(3) and hit the drums how you think they should be hit. Sometimes it's good to record certain parts at different time signatures ie. change the time sig, overdub and hit the spots you couldn't hit before, don't forget it's sometimes also easier to slow the tempo down and get at certain parts. Lastly, try different swing percentages, salt, season to taste and serve.

use a setting of 62% on the hats and snare. maybe even the kick. you'll get that sloppy house feeling on the hats and snares. using the right sounds will help dramiticly, i find house sounds alot better using breaks and a 909 kick.

cool i'll try these out, althogh i have been using 62% swing and 909 kik, i just got to figure out the pattern then.

actually i dont want the sloppy feel i want the tight, rollin feel.
dont know if any of u r familar with dylan drazen the type of stuff he plays is what i;m trying to get the rollin galloping feel

tarunt 3 4 tarunt 3 4 tarunt 3 4 tarunt

If you want it tight and rolling there's not only the swing that counts.... here's how I do it....

set the swing to around 57 (perfect setting for this) and then hit the 16 levels button and choose velocity..... if you want the push fell (driving forward) choose a softer velocity for the first hit and then hit say every two pads... this pushes the beat. then you can take the first note and move it 1 or two ticks earlier.... bim bam boom BOOM... you can also do it the other way round with the firs note strong it's all up to you..... BOOM bim bam boom....

then go to the preset and the modulation matrix and assign velocity to filter cut off with as pretty small subtle value.... this means the harder the velocity, the slightly more slap you'll get... also you can play with the decay as it gets higher in velocity... you'll see, it'll bring life to the kick even if it's just playing on it's own with a simple bass line....

the rolling feel in any music comes from the subtle changes in the sound itself, not only where it's placed. DYNAMICS is the key to house... Keep the reverbs short, the snares pretty short... and you should have a tight beat in a matter of minutes...

then I kind of counter the kick with the hats..... like the same quantize but instead of having the highest velocity on the last note, it's the first note that's highest veloicy and the last note with the lowest.... quantizing is a must with the drums in house and deep house imo.... it ain't like trying toi get a real drummer's sound...

As lampdog said, you can turn the tempo down to feel it better....

hope this helps.......

deaf mute is right....dynamics and space are the key to house so make sure you are fully utilising the decay options on all your drums...yes even kicks...

cool fellas that hepled abit i just cant get that gallop feel yet, i can tell the difference but i think it's all in the waY YOU SETT YOUR DRUM PATTERN ,cause i can almost feel the gallop feel to my beats now i just have to program the drums a certain way it seems like.

how would i lay the hats for the gallop feel , i imagine the same way right.

for the drums should i put them on 1 ,3, and snares on 2,4, i'm using 1/16th note, you guys say use 1/16(3) that would be for every thing or just drums and snare,

i have been experimenting and it's sounds good but still not in the ryhthm i'm lookin for .

any more reply's are appreciated
thanks

think about the gallop feel first in volume then placement..the gallop feel has heavier accents leading up to the beat ga-llOP....so you perhaps want to make the notes leading up to the accent quiter and building in volume- same with placement first part of it seems rushed and then it catches up with itself so the first part of the beat would have rushed notes and the second part lagging notes as this push-pull will repeat 4 times each bar you should get a nice rolling effect....make sure your note lengths are not too long or the whole thing'll turn to mush....

cool greg i'll try this out, i think i unnderstand what your saying , coz i did use a heavier sound first, so i'll just try and flip it .
would you suggest using the note repeat to get the rolling feel in the begining with a softer drum. or just place drums closer to gether in the step edit field.

dont use note repeat use the step edit perhaps slow the squence right down or program in straight- why not look at the note placement of a similar loop through recycle? or perhaps set you offbeat hihats back 3 ticks and work around from there....
