Does anyone use a midi patchbay?

I was looking to buy a 8X8 midi interface (patchbay) and I was wondering exactly how they work, the guy at sam ash didn't know for sure. I want to know do you have control over each individual channel or is it just control over the midi port (ex. can I assign midi input channel #1 of midi input port #1 to control midi output channel #5 of midi output port #7)?
I hope this makes sense.

its to give u extra midi hookups like if u have more soundmodules that u want to add to your mpc with out going through the other models u could use it to go directly to it or u can use it to go from your computer to all your midi gear

Yes!! You can do that with the midisport.
