AKAI 950 Time STRETCHING and Truncating

I having some of the same problems as Drumatic so Some PLEASE HELP
ME WITH THESE QUESTIONS!!!!!!!


Anybody here using an S950? I'm still fairly new to it and haven't quite figured out the time stretch feature that so many kats used back in the 90s.

••> I've got a few questions on time stretching:

1. How do I match the bpm of the beat i'm working on.

2. Is the time stretch function irreversible once it has been initiated? If so should I make sure I have a duplicate copy of the sound in memory or just reload it from disk?

1. When truncating drum samples such as a kick or snare what is the best method for finding the 0 starting point at which the samples attack occurs. On the MPC-60II you can search for it using the soft start function. On an SP12(00) you can set the note resolution to hi and hold down the repeat pad while editing your samples and listen for the attack. On the S950 it seems to be automatic but if you rotate the knob it seems to jump quite a bit and almost seems to cut off the attack of my kick drum. I'm not sure how this works exactly. I've read the manual as I always do and still seem to be having difficulty with it.

2. Also is it possible to adjust fade/decay at the end of a sample in a manner such as on the MPC60II? If so how is this achieved?

you actually use find soft start? I never do, I get there punching numbers and scrolling the wheel, sometimes you find a better sound by cutting more/less at the beginning. try to get to know the numbers, then the knob movements you make will be more precise and if you jump them you will know more or less where you are trying for.

I would guess that the S950 is not expecting drums (and did not involve roger linn) so it might not have that find start feature.

Look under envelopes, there should be ADSRs there for fade ins and outs. Probably defaults to full sustain and zero everything else.

can't help you with timestretch, but I would assume you need a copy of the sample if you want both effected and not.

there is some kind of timestretch calculator to find bpms, I just never timestretch anything unless I am able to do it in real time.

timestretch on the s950 creates a new sample... so after timestretching, you will have the original sample, and the newly created timestretched sample... you must of course have enough memory to fit the newly created timestretched sample...

the key to everything on the s950 is the EDIT SAMPLE and EDIT PROGRAM menus, learn them well...
