whats up fellas.....? lIsten, how do u guys get hard drum sounds..? like hard just tight and loud without any mixing or anything.... i visited a friend of mine studio the other day and he put one of his MPC outs in the avalon and his kick was baggin...I was like wow...how did he do that...like i did not really catch the setup... but he was telling me that he runs most of his drums through his avalon...! who has done that and how is it done??

the avalon is a $1000 preamp. theres ur answer.

i would like to do it right now...he is not in town...so i thought someone could help me figure that out because they have done it or doing it....

all he's doing is compressing his drums (Using a compressor) Theres a few different ones on the market all strong in their own right

Also consider the fact that he is using high quality samples, and knows how to tweak sounds to get the desired sound....U any good at that sort of stuff

im pretty good....but how is he going through the avalon...is he doing that one by one...cause i dont see that happening with 8 outs bravo...

I use Sound Forge w/ some plugs ie. Ultrafunk and Waves compressors. Maybe combined with other plugin features if needed ie. limiters, exciters and/or brickwalls.

L.D when u are tracking your music do u track the levels high where the red is going of and on...or do u track kind of low and then eq or compress the instruments??

You can use two outputs cause most Avalons can be switched between dual mono and stereo.
You should really ask your friend. There's a bunch of different avalons, and they all do different stuff, so it's impossible to tell if he's compressing, eq-ing or just running it throught the pre-amp. I could also be that he's got monitors that just sound a lot better than the ones you're used to.

Lamp has got a point, using software is a lot more economical than buying an Avalon. I think they start at $1500 and the more expensive ones are probable well over $10K.
Perhaps you're friend can lend it to you for a few days, so you can resample some off your drums trough it.

well i have an avalon...i have the avalon Class A mic processor...the one with the eq's to the left and the compression to the right....i just wasn't thingking about that concept until he introduced it.....


i dont want to recompress my whole drum catalog through that though...what plug in would u guys recommend/??

Don't mess with plugs if you have an Avalon. I envy you. the cool thing about Avalons is you can make your drums bang, without sounding overcompressed.

It sounds like your friend can teach you some things about compression too. I'm not sure how good you are with compressors, but if you're not an expert already you can start here:

The trick with compressor/eq units, like the one you have, is that you can put the eq before the compressor or after.
So if you boost the low end on a kick with the eq to make it kick harder , but you compress after that, it will also compress that low end again. With the eq AFTER the compressor, you can add as much low as you want without the compressor catching it.
I probably suck at expaining this.......
Basically you'll probably use the eq BEFORE the compressor when mastering or something, but AFTER when recording a kick. Experiment to figure out what I mean.

man, forget a 1,000 pre-amp. if you're rich and got dough like that, then do you, but you can make drums knock without all that.

1) layer your drums
2) compress your drums
3) see #1

any sampler will enable you to layer your drums. you can use filters also - ie. high pass and low pass - to help the different kicks and/or snares blend smoothly. compress your drums in combo with layering and it's on.

i disagree, u can get good drum sounds from whatever, but if u have good tools and the know how to use em ur alot better off. u get what u pay for.

He might compress his drums on the way into the sampler, I gotta try that.
