How can I...

How can I use samples to cut off other samples? I know when you are mono mode you can press the pad and press it again and it will cut the sample off. Can I get 4 samples spread over 4 pads then when I press one pad, press another andf get it to cut the first sound off.

I tried a search but came up with nothing.

press open window on the mono/stereo window and there you can define two pads which will cut of the sample- used in my hihats, purcussion and multis all the time...

Along with what Dub said did you try the book? What MPC are you using? I know it's in the XL manual..

On the mpc 1k you go to
1.Program mode
2. parameters
3. assign the pads you want to cut each other of the same mute group number.
Its as simple as that...... I just learned how to do it today though. I had some spare time so I READ THE MANUAL!!!!!!! and learned some things.

Thats something that I never thought about trying on the 1000 to be honest I'm shocked it has that function it's lacking a lot stuff we need that should have been nothing to put on it. Wonder what the next os holds?

Sorry I did forget to say I use the 2kxl,

I keep the xl manual on my laptop here at work also just in case.

I read it every now and then when I'm bored to see if I'm missing something that I need to know..

I always read over the manual when Im bored etc....You find that as ur understanding for your gear grows, your understanding on what the hell they are going on about in the manual does too.

Now theres an idea would have to hide it in my draw though. It's about time I had another read of it anyway.

Dub- I found that pdf cheers. Also when you use the mute function do you use both an closed and openhh?

pour que? if you mean do i use a closed hat to cut off and open and vice versa then yes all the time but not just hats- if your making grooves you can set your percussive elements to cut each other of for cool effect- work well for that rollin techno sound...

Cheers for that though, I have not even contemplated percussion yet man just tryin to get the hats, kicks and snares going. Getting there though made a nice little skippy number last night just using an open hh on the off beat and messing with the kicks. I was suprised as it sounded like a good tight beat. Like a proper one!!!!! shock horror. So roll on home time and I can get stuck back into it!!!

But as for the percussion greg do you use a bongo hit for example then make a couple copies then pitch up and down then arrange in your sequence. I say this as I tried it but not to great effect. Could shine a light on it for me?

well percussion can be done too ways- if its not gonna be prominent you can blag it- i have and people have said oh cool sample- its not a sample fools its me wildly hitting pads, editing and then adding a verb....but sometimes this 'jungle rhythm' approach wont cut it- therefore try and emulate a real player-

bongos are played with two hands- each hand can make two sounds- slap and bass- the bass is the one with the long decay and ringy sound- the slap is well the short flat one....so you end up with four main hits right slap & right bass, left slap and left bass- of course there are loads of other nuances like muffles and stuff but i wont go into that here....If you have some well recorded bongo samples you can set them up accross four pads- if in stereo pan the left to about 11 oclock and the right to 1 oclock- further if you like but anything extreme will sound unnatural...then you can program your hits in, for that funky effect put two hits on the same beat but separate them by 4-6 ticks- nice bongo flam effect- for bongo grooves you can probably search the net for sheet music to emulate to give you an understanding of how bongo rhythms work...
