Sequencing preferences

Whassup ladies & gents, im interested to hear which method of sequencing peeps prefer. Do you only sequence on ya MPC and then turn to ya PC/Mac for final recording/multitracking or do you prefer to sequence using Cubase, Sonar or whatever.
Im interested to hear peoples preferences and why they choose that method. Just getting more involved with my software (what a headache ) personally i would rather avoid using my PC as much as possible, but until I win the lottery & can afford a full hardware setup gonna have to bite the bullet !

AKAI DPS 12. then i save a backup to cd and open it in ableton live and mixdown with ill plugins.

Yo Bing, just taken a peek at the DPS 12 looks cool.. Might have to take a closer look at that bad boy sometime, cash permitting obviously

there cheap on ebay. get the 12i. 12 tracks, effects, and 20 gig hd for under $400.

Hi. I do all my composing like this:

- get things going with a bass line from either 303 or fr777 or sometimes using the fr777 to drive my MS-20. This is very fast as the 303/777's step sequencers are very quick to uses.
- start to build up drums in Cubase using the drum editor (intend to start using the MPC1000 driving my Airbase more for this)
- build up the song in Cubase, usually committing midi parts to audio very early.
- record remaining midi parts into audio, processing the **** out of everything (record a lot of stuff wet)
- transfer all the audio loops into the MPC for live shows
- transfer the 303/777 midi parts into the MPC as midi so can play these 'live' in shows. My 303 has midi in and out and is probably the second 303 in the world to have midi out; it is certainly the second one in the world to have the midi kit interfacing straight into the CPU rather then being a internal midi/CV converter. This allows the 303 patterns to be captured and replayed exactly as played from its internal sequencer. But I digress...

So at the mo, my MPC is just a 'loop player' for live use. I intend to start using it more for drum construction, hooked up to my Airbase..

mpc as master- alpha juno-> out1-> ch1(with dodgy midi loop i wont go into here), vintage keys +->out2 chs2-16, a-station out2->ch1, lexicon lxp1 out 1->ch15, bossvf-1 out 1->ch16...

midman controller keyboard into in 1 of mpc-

all sequencing done on mpc, keys played in through the keyboard- everything else tapped or edited in; all gets recorded into the pc...

Also no printer so havin to read damn pdf's and switching windows, all that mularky.. Oh what fun

hope it made sense- my set up means all midi program change, control change messages are all on the mpc meaning every tune i load up will automatically pick the right effects, track levels, drum programs and synth patches- well most of the time!! haha

This years approach is all about software unfortunately.

MPC first though with VSTi SYNCED through Cubase. when everything sounds right with structure I audio all channels to PC through EMU
Then I EQ fiddle etc with all the tracks get a nice sound but I dont save it I untill the vocals run nicely which is recorded before I send in the full track, so i usually just have it synced till the vocals are right then i mess about with the full thing together in stages.

Before is was the MPC2000xl and DPS16 and Yamaha01v mixer mpc mpc with sound modules no software, just samples and proteus triton etc. once done I start recording vocals into the DPs which is synced the to DPS
once I done I mix it all in the 01v mxer.

Thanks again chaps Penfold, sounds very similar to my set up.. Gotta say I like the idea of a multitrack recorder Akai dps 24 looks the dogs testicles!! but a heavy price tag

I think the key is to use both and I think a lot of people will eventually settle into this position.

Hardware Sequencers (with audio, MPCs etc)
+ very quick/productive
+ keeps the vibe going
+ portable (all the usual 'stage friendly stuff')
- editing will always be slightly more tricky
- audio processing will be limited
- on their own, difficult to get that very pro polished sound.
- can't download porn

Computer Sequencers
+ complex editing
+ 'unlimited' memory/track count
+ 'unlimited' effects
+ total sound mangling/processing
+ can get a pro polished sound
- less productive/vibe
- less portable/stable (becoming less of an issue with laptops

Im bored now .. The list goes on and on but I think it comes down to "vibe verses power" (MPC verses DAW). Both are very important and you might limit yourself if you dismiss either..

LOL Good point Mr Disco, maybe Akai could give us that facility in an OS upgrade.. Might send them an email suggesting it !
