Just wanted to share a thing with you guys. It was The first time I have done this, so I learnt lots...
Job: Mixing a guitar band's recording done in a studio
One of the problems with the recording was that the drum track was sloppy. I can't stand sloppy drum tracks, and for the production ideas I had for the rest of the track, the drums and bass needed to groove like a mutha. SO.... I sampled drum hits from the track into my MPC 60 - real crisp and slightly overdriven on the record input. Then created a little loop which would go behind the played drum track. I then used Sherman filterbank to filter and shape the sounds to how they would sit in the track.
using Digital Performer's Beat Detective I found all beats in my MPC groove and created a groove quantize from that. Then I applied this groove quantize to the drum track. In some places it didn't really work, so I left some passages unquantized (eg. the choruses, fills, outro...) To finish off everything was mixed to taste with a little reverb on snares, compression eq etc.
I am amazed at the tools we have available to us these days in order to get a job done. Halfway through this, I thought was it actually worth the hassle, but I learned loads about how to use my MPC in band production and got much deeper into DP. The song now has a groove that is as tight as a nats chuff when it needs to be.
The rest of the song, vocal and all, that's another story...
But it sounds bloody good!!!
