Another swing question!

BTW I have searched and read this section in the manual just a coupla quick questions. I have a 2kxl

Are these statements true?

Swing only affects the track you are on?

Swing is returned to normal when set back to 50% 1/16 on a track?

I ask as it seems that when I have been using swing on say a hi hat track. when I use the note repeat for doubling up notes on say the kick track the notes are swung also. is it a case of going into the kick track and making sure there is no swing on that track? I am not in front of my machine right know just thinking about it at work.

Your help is appreciated

Thanks

Yes, but when you switch tracks the swing setting follows and you have to set it back to normal boefre recording to that other track.

Yes.

Kool,

Thanks Lampdog,

That has been bugging me for a while I was wondering why I could not hear the swing on individual tracks but on the whole piece instead. I am going to check this out tonite.

Thanks alot really appreciate it.

swing= individual tracks- if swing is set after pattern recorded you need toi quantize- if befoire it will autoquantize....

Hi Greg,

Can you just explain this bit please..

if swing is set after pattern recorded you need toi quantize.

I make my beats quantized generally on 1/16 or 1/32 so when I start recording I just play the notes in, the notes will quantize to the nearest note. Is that what you mean.

I hope that makes sense.

Cheers

yeah basically turn your swing off and record something real sloppy like- it will play back with the same cack-handedness.....now set your quantize rate to 16ths and press ok- it will then go through and quantize all recorded notes...

so the opposite way would be to have it on and bang your notes in as it will quantize on the fly as you record....lots of peeps do this for their on-beats

personally have your kicks on its own track- no swing- just 4 to da floor , hats on its own track at say just the offbeat notes- again you dont need to touch the swing- then on a third track set your swing to 57%, 62%, 65% or anything in between, tap in some hits which dont fall on either the bass drum or hihat and listen to how those notes swing-

if im remembering rightly its a housy style you are after- try experimenting with triplets as well but only on the 3rd 16th note.....

0-24-48-72 becomes
0-24-48-80

its just a common setting that is used.....hope i havent confused you at all

Greg means that if you set a swing of 67% (for example) on your first track (example: kick) BEFORE you record the track (meaning before you hit the pads), the kick will be at that swing setting, and every track you record after that will automatically be set to that setting as well - until/unless you adjust them.

However...

if you record the track 1 (kick drum, for example) before changing the swing, in other words, if you record the kick drum unswung, and then adjust the swing on it after youve recorded the sequence, then that swing setting will only affect that track and the next tracks that you record in the sequence will be unaffected until you change them.

Does that make more sense? Here's the short version....

if you change swing before you make track 1 in sequence = all tracks in sequence are automatically set to the adjusted swing

if you change swing after you make track 1 in sequence = only that track is affected

Cheers Greg,

That makes things clearer and thanks for the tip with the triplets. As you know I do make house and I have been experimenting with triplets for little snare fills with low velocity for a while but I would be interested to see how your tip will work.

I also did not realise about the quantize if you set it to off then go set it to 1/16 for example it will automatically adjust pre recorded notes, good to know that.

I think I told you before but I have soundforge and I have recorded some beat loops, I would be interested to see what you think of them being a house producer for a while yourself. Is it possible to send a soundclip as an email attachment? so you could have a listen?

Also thanks to tic-toc it all helps

Cheers again

okay, im also still having some issues with this one.

when i wanna change the swing on individual track, should i choose
for the NOTE the pad im using on that track?

when i start with 50%, and after reccin change the track01 toi 56%, and then
rec track02 and change it to 58%, does the track01 really stay on 56%?

im using 1k.

hecto yes-

use your step edit function to see where your swung notes lie:

if you want in on track one and it was stright 16ths- it would read

0, 24, 48, 72 every time you jumped a sixteenth note....if there was any amount of swing notes 2 and 4 would have different values-

say 0 , 28, 48 and 76 for example- lets say this is a 56% setting- if you then swung your notes on track 2 by 58% the notes wouldn't fall in the same place-

would probabvly look like this:

0, 30, 48, 78...that way you know track 2 has a different swing setting to track 1...

but if you cant hear the difference perhaps there is no point in swing each track individually

Nice one Greg, I will start a thread.

I am still slightly confused about swing to be honest. I tried at the weekend to change different tracks to different settings, but when I go into a track and change to say 57% on closed hi hats, I will go to the next track and open swing it is already on 57% then when I change it to 50% and go back into the closed hi hat track it is back to 50% and not on 57%. Am I doing something wrong here?

Is it best to go into swing first before recording and set it there?

cheers

basically the mpc aint clever enough to display which swing setting you used for each track- if you have your kicks straight on track 1 with bno swing, then go to track 2 and swing your hats, looking at the swing setting screen on any track after that will show you the last swing setting you used, not what was used for that particular track-

think of the swing setting window as something that sets values not something that displays them too-

you could record all 64 tracks with no swing, go into the swing window and set it to 75%; then went to each track and opened the swing setting window it would show 75% on all tracks- its not saying that all tracks are at 75% its saying that 75% was the last swing setting value you used...

hope that helps

Thanks Greg,

That has answered my question, I was getting a little frustrated for a while thinking why is this not changing!

I think I finally understand swing 8)

I will drop you a little snipet in the email.

Well I was making more beats last night using my new found knowledge. But there is still one thing that puzzled me when I put a swing on my hi hats and looked at the note placement in step edit they were still in the same place I had put them, not on a swung setting...arrrrgh.
