Best magazine for beat makers?

I wanted to start a thread about what would be the best magazine to subscribe to as a beatmaker... I saw this magazine called "Scratch" and it claimed it was the only magazine that deals with the "beats" of hip-hop... any others like it out there? or other magazines that would help learn better mixing of beats? I mean i know there are magazines like EQ and mix, but most of the time they deal with artists like John Mellencamp and Bonnie Raitt; i don't care how she gets the patented twang in her production, I wanna know what eq settings just blaze uses to get that low-end thump, anyone feel me?

He didn't need a magazine to figure that out either, so why should you? Use your ears, not your eyes.

check my avatar. Scratch is the sh1t! alot of dudes on here don't like sratch. scratch doesn't really teach you tricks and tips of producing, it just talks about different producers that are currently out making that paper. Remix and EM are good but basically the same as scratch.

Not that I really need it but i wish there were a publication that gives up techniques of the trade. Everything that i know is learned by trial and error; experimenting and listening to songs to try to copy the sound.

you can do what ieism just said about the eq'ing or you could layer your sound (two or more kicks together makes a deeper sound without eq'ing)

I think the tricks of the trade are just plain practice. If you want to break into the industry you haVE To come with your own sh*t.

they had alc in there not too long ago..latest issue had madlib on the cover....


his engineer talked about **** with samples and eq techniques. Its pretty dope but unless your in a studio wiuth other engineers and shit like that your not going to be handed this "secret" information

SOS is probably the best but sometimes dry if you don't like to geek out.

The manuals to your gear is probably the best reading you can do.

Hot Trax DVD magazine is supposed to be cool.... I'm gonna order one

scratch is a certified piece of shyt if you want to learn ish. They might tell you how much they hate Kanye, but then you could read this forum for that. Or, maybe you'd like to know who Eminem got his drums from, another ground breaking article. What about why Jalen Rose likes to dj?

Remix is far better than scratch, but......

I've learned more from the cats on this forum than any of the newsstand garbage.

Damn, how'd you figure this one out? Frequency analyzer? Also, isn't 28 db kind of extreme?

I was thinking more along the lines of the money and politicin' side of producing... like standard contract negotiations b/t the producer, rapper, and label and how to represent yourself business-wise as a hip-hop producer, how certain producers came up... like what they did to get their foot in the door, etc.

haven't ever read it, but it's interesting that a mag would take sides like that..
