I think there's quite a few guys here with no formal musical training - I guess it's not a necessity depending on the type of music you wish to create.
I used to teach music (mostly guitar), so if anyone wants any lessons...

altho i used to play the drums which kinda helps... but im strictly teaching myself ground up style.
I never thought i'd get into all this bloody transposing and key tweaking but its an addiction.
Sadat X.. sickness....... lump lump is sooooo hotttt
but you know who's really on it especially right now... MF Doom.
good to see other uk heads recognising the golden era and teachin themself the trade
peace to all the grimey producers who dont do the maths and use their ears as their guide.

I'm not sure how long, less than i year i think. i don't have many finished projects either. I never happy enough with my stuff to actually record and mix the whole thing. I ussually just turn of my MPC, and start fresh the next day.
I got asked to do a live gig though, so it can't be that bad

I got formal music training and the only thing I use from it is chord structure. Thats the only real benefit is that you know and understand chord structure, which you can teach yourself in a weekend.
Rhythm is inhernet so either you got it or you don't, I know lotsa girls that have played piano since they could stand erect, yet couldnt play a piece w/o sheet music or jam to save their lives.
Music talent can be summed up in 1 phrase:
I got rhythm, and I know what sounds nice and what does not.

absolutely no formal training here. I'm trying to teach myself chords and just some basics of theory, but I don't get too bogged down in it. I'm not trying to compose an concerto or anything, just the boom-bap.

i used to play a couple of different horns but that was pretty basic level shizzle.
now i'm just skilled in the trade of the ol boom bap.

This is one of the big reasons I switched from playing guitar to electronic music. Music theory and training is so confining. The best tools should be your ears. Listening to music is always a better education than reading a book. Just my opinion.

im a Conservatorium grad but that has little to do with my electronic music production per se
more of an audio engineering education.
the real shit comes from inside and an ear for good rhythm and sound sourcing. i wouldnt let "official" music backgrounds get in the way of pumping great music.
