Dub sound

When I listen to an artist like Lee Scratch Perry I ask myself "How the **** is he doing that" Anyone got any tips to getting that dub sound? I have the effects board on my 2000xl and am running Pro Tools. I mess with delay and reverb and never get the sound I'm looking for. Any tips would be appreciated.
