Shhgghhh... [static]

I was sitting in my car listening to the radio, when i noticed how some static (i 'm not sure if this is the right word, i mean the radio wasn't recieving properly) did magic to the snares on Prince's "Kiss".
I tried duplicating it at home with some distortion and filters, but i couldn't get it to sound the same.
Anybody got any tips on how to get this effect?
I'm considering calling a radio-station to play the tune for me but it would be less shamefull if i could do it myself.

not sure if this is what you talking about percent. But on that tip i've been meaning to sample some static flat of the radio and us efx like flanger and slicer to see if i can come with some interesting sounds and patterns and then layer that into a tune in some way or chop it up and use it as drum noises !!! Ohh think i'm getting carried away think i''l stop there and go fiddle with some rubber pads ....

Hmmm....i might give that a try too. I think i'll sample some short drumsounds with lots of static off the radio, and layer them with clean hits. It's worth a try, thanks.

the ROLand EF-303 has this lo-fi effect have you guys tried this it sounds like an AM station static it's pretty nice sounding .just an idea

have you tried just downsampling the snare on the mpc? and/or adding some crackle to that snare

Well, i've tried just about everything. The closest i got was sampling the drum, adding a little distortion and layering it with some noise. The noise came from a synth, and it didn't really sound that good. I also tried layering with static recorded from the radio, but i need the noise to kick in only towards the end of the snare.
I've pretty much given up, and i'm now sitting by my radio 24/7 waiting for the tune to come by
Thanks for all the tips though, it did produce some interesting results that i might find a use for one day.
