A top secret military base, a mile below the surface of the desert near Roswell, New Mexico. They have drum kits and mics there that were found on a crashed spaceship. Don't tell anyone I told you.

people hate this question cause it gets asked all the time.... but hip hop drums usually come from breakbeats sampled and chopped including some of the names above. Others use sound presets from their synth eg:triton or buy samples or combine/layer sounds. it all starts with your ears and what you think sounds good. Peace

I live in new mexico and that roswell story was true. See when that whole Roswell alien crash happend on board the alien ship was some disks. When the scientists finally figured out how to decode the data on the discs what did they find? That's right incredible drum sounds. You can imagine the U.S. government wanted to keep these tight drums under wraps (the fifties just wasn't ready). They made an exception, due to all the suffering the african americans endured they paid reperations, in the form of the alien drum samples. The samples were divided between the east coast, west coast, the south and the midwest. Kanye West's hand claps, Dr. Dre's Kicks, and all the drum sounds from the tr-808 (except the cowbell) and more all came from that ship.

Strange indeed but true none the less.

i'd be really surprised if the "top" producers are actually still using chopped breaks.

because i'm not a "top" producer and don't have the cash to splash i stick with breaks, sample cds (from usenet), and drum synths.

i'd be even willing to put money down that the "top" producers have their own sample sets that they've created - just having session drummers come in with different kits mic'ed in various ways.

with all of the processing options available to the producer you can make your drums sound like anything you want...

think outside the beatbox kids.

there are cats who say the transistor was reverse engineered from alien wreckage, they got some interesting evidence, who knows. if you think about it, that's what made all this technology possible.
